When I See Dirty MCs
I think it depends on where you live. Up in New England with the winters it is very difficult to keep my car clean as it's my daily driver. In the summer, however, it is a much different story and my car gets washed about 2 times a week.
I am in the PNW , and I mean its hard to keep it spick and span even washing it weekly. But some of them just look like people don't appreciate the vehicle :P

How to remove greasy prints, onlooker drool spatters and road grime to restore your MINI’s lustrous factory finish:
Step 1. Maintain proper perspective.
MINI owners do notirrationally obsess about such things. Bug guts on the grille and muddy fenders are signs of a healthy, well-motored life. Imagine it’s like tooling around town in a Jackson Pollock original. But every now and then, you may want to start over with a clean canvas.
Step 2. Always use a soft sponge and mild biodegradable soap. Land and sea creatures are our friends.

Plus, while a clean MINI looks awesome, a dirty MINI means he isn't parked in the garage and I can excuse that!
what makes me mad is when my MCS is dirty and people who get mad because it's dirty doesn't do anything about it
i'd love to keep my car clean all the time, but it isn't possible. my work is physically taxing, i don't have a garage and park in the street, have to feed self wash machines (adds up and monthly allowance takes a hit). and with winter finally here, it makes even less sense to keep cleaning only to get dirty in no time. i'd rather go out for a drive instead of trying to keep my car clean.

Mine is brand new, and at the moment it is dirty as heck.
That said, I have a full time job that pays me, and I run a nonprofit to help people who are disabled learn to play video games (http://www.ablegamers.org) that takes another 35 to 50 hours a week (NO PAY). Oh, and to get to my paying job everyday is a 50 mile drive one way...
so I say all that to say, as much as I LOVE MY CAR, I am on the inside, not running along side of it, so I add it to the list and get to it when I have an hour to enjoy it, but I can only see a little of the dirt from where I sit.

Seriously though: do mudflaps help much? My new MINI gets crap just behind the wheel wells even after a 3 mile drive home from the car wash on a sunny dry day.
She gets hosed off at the Local DIY Car Wash, not my preference though. Where in the PNW are you where it is warm enough to wash your MINI every week??
Griot's Garage Spray on Car Wash is my Winter Cleaning Tool!!
There's a difference between dirty from motoring and neglect. Dirty from motoring, woo hoo. Neglect...I always think "Poor MINI".
Earlier this week, drove alongside a 2008 (?) cooper hardtop. Absolutely filthy. Like mildew growing on the Pepper white paint it hadn't been washed in so long. A fist sized dent on the drivers quarter panel that was allowed to rust. And a months worth of mail and newspapers on the cargo cover. The portly driver was too engrossed in her cigarette and starbucks to notice my look of shock.

Dang if Yellow doesn't show every kind of dirt. Say what you will about white and black cars, but Yellow shows what both of those colors hide. Yellow always is dirty except for right after you wash it...and then it's sweet!
I too have a 30 mile one way commute as well. It just gets dirty, it happens.
Mine get's washed regularly, but not weekly. It's been pretty dry around here (I was on vacation for the two weeks it was crappy) and I walked past my car today and about fell over from the spray from the wheels. Ugh, getting a bath this weekend for sure. Hopefully.

Have to agree with SCMountaineer and RJKimbell- the car is going to get dirty if you are motoring but you can tell the difference between that and a car that is being neglected. Those neglectful owners are not "motorers", they just wanted a Mini 'cause they thought that would make them cool (probably did for a while- ha, ha, ha!). I like a clean car and try to keep it clean when ever I can. A clean car shows pride in your ride.
I washed it before going out last weekend and it got filthy on my 200 mile loop- I'm not worried. But got a huge chip in the roof paint too from a rock I didn't see.
That, I have to fix right away.

Just installed mudflaps all around and they DO seem to help some. In no way do they keep the back of the car clean, they just seem to reduce the amount of dirt that sprays on the sides of the doors and the rear bumper.
I try to wash my car once a week- as long as its not freezing.

I'm the lucky one. Live in lower Alabama and I can clean mine and it stays clean for 2 weeks at a time (for the most part). Don't have a garage but a big 25X30 metal carport. Wife has the carport attached to the house. Only thing I hate is the condensation that accumulates under the metal roofing and drips on the Mini. Sometimes I clean it just to do something whether it needs it or not.
