In this case, I think Fiat is trying to say "come explore the potential long-term relationship you can have with this sexy/spicy car"... embodied by a faux Italian sexy woman. :-)
Wow, I didn't see anything about a relationship in that commercial. One night stand maybe...weekend fling, but she doesn't look like the long term relationship type of woman.

Hmmmm...neither does the Fiat. I'd like to flog an Abarth, but not own one.

Ahem. My understanding is that the Gen 1 MINI engines were co-developed by Chrysler. That's what I heard early on when researching to buy one.
Just in case anyone missed this point earlier.

Erm, you're kidding me, right?

I said IMO (do you know what that means?) I am offering an opinion, simple as that. Perhaps you're new to forums? I never said the ad wasn't increasing sales, I said it's a FAIL.

But if FIAT's strategy is to alienate both sexes, then yes, I am wrong, it's a Win for FIAT.

I think the title of this thread should be amended with "IMO" at the end....

I'll take my 121 horsepower in the Justacooper over those problems. If all I cared about was going fast, I would have gotten a Mustang.
Again noted on early R56s.. you take your 121BHP and I will take my 250BHP and laugh at you.

Wonderful, this thread seems to be degenerating into "my ***** is bigger than yours".

Can't we just get along--and agree to hate Mustang owners?

You dont have to hide your poor education and inability to spell by claiming "SMS mode". haha.

If its not forced induction.. then i dont care.

Always being bratty when the grown men are talking
I won't laugh when you blow up your engine.

Cool, have fun when your engine blows up. I'll enjoy my Justa and my BMW 330i.

ANYWAY!

This is a fun video! These are Euro-spec cars, but still can indicate general performance:

Excellent find—answers a lot of questions.

I don't mind the looks of the Abarth (love the scorpian logo too), but neither of those cars can hold a candle to the MINI in overall appeal.

Even if the MINI had lost, I'd still choose it over the others.

I would like to drive the new Abarth 500 but I would rather own the classic Fiat 500. Ive seen many new Fiat 500's around and they just dont do anything for me

Bottom line- the Fiat looks like a baked potato with headlights!

I don't see it as comparable. I think they're cute, but not in the same market as a Mini. I see them more like Smart competitors or other econo-entry-level small cars. I see a Mini as more of a premium car...only sharing the small size category with it. I see more BMW in my Mini than anything else.

Exterior: (IMO) Better looking than a R56 or Countryman, not as good looking as the GenI, Clubman or Coupe.

Interior: (IMO) looks way better than any GenII (though that's not saying much)

Performance: TBD. Will have to take a test drive, but @ 2533lbs w/ 160hp & 170lb torque I'd think it'd be comparable to a MINI S.

How much (in USD) will an Abarth cost?

I'd still be leaning toward the MINI (Clubman or Coupe), but I more than welcome some direct competition for the MINI in N. America.
