Mastering the Asphalt Arts

I just stumbled across this today, and I did a quick search of the forum and was stunned that it didn't come up anywhere but in a 2005 thread. The link there was dead, so I figured I'd repost it with a fresh thread. Apologies if it's already posted lots of places and it's just a failure of my search fu.

http://www.miniusa.com/downloads/asphalt_arts.pdf

It's a short, easy-to-understand pamphlet by MINI on race techniques. I don't race, but I think the info easily applies to driving more safely and effectively, with less wear-and-tear on the car, so I think it'll make me a better "spirited" driver.

It has an awesome set of instructions and insights on seating, vision, handling, braking, steering, shifting, cornering, and accelerating. There's even a section explaining how to heel-toe, and the pictures there really helped me grasp the concept better.

I saw these on the website, but not in nifty downloadable format.

Yeah - I'm much happier with the downloadable so I can have it on my laptop and go out to the car and adjust my seat and not worry about connectivity.

I almost printed it today, but I figured that for any of the stuff I need to practice in motion, I shouldn't be referring to a printout. I should read and memorize whatever I need to know, so I'm not looking at anything except the road.

That is cool. I'll have to spend some time to go thru that later while not at work. Nice find

Nice find for sure.

I saw some Youtube videos last night where some young guy in a Cooper S is explaining shifting, rev matching, double clutching, and hard starts. The audio sucked but the inset camera on his feet was a nice touch and while his explanation could barely be heard over the wind noise (he needs to close the windows next time or do a voice over) it was fairly interesting to people like me that need to work on these areas.

I think I saw that same guy, it was helpful when I was starting to learn manual.

While I don't peel it off in first at all I can't help but go through the gears every chance I get so it's nice to hear similar principles explained or shown in different ways. I'm receptive to anything that will help build the skills.

Now where are those keys?

The biggest skill builder is to have a good teacher go out with you. Most tracks require this if you are a novice. The next best thing is practice, practice and more practice.
