I reread the OPs question and it is specifically about heel-toe down shift slowness that has to do with the heavy dual OEM mass flywheel.

OP, I still heel - toe almost every downshift and with stock flywheel, the only thing you can do is use the wait time to down shift slower and use neutral as a check of which gear you are moving into.

Though at least with a cable driven car you could always tighten the cable and get a little more response out of it that you can't do with the new system.
It's absolutely subjective to your taste. And my taste is that this car is terrible for a "driver's car"!

Its not that big of a deal. I am just saying I would have to ride in your MINI to see what you are talking about.

I use mine as a daily driver and I know that the lag is there on my R53 but just adjusting my clutch/shift patterns has made a huge difference in the way it responds. I am actually currently looking into some options that have been used on other applications to make the lag a little less of an issue. If I am able to locate a suitable option to fix it (cost effective) I will post it up.

Curious. I have an 06 cabriolet with every JCW option and the throttle response is brisk and immediate.

Just proves that every gen1 mini is a bit different!!!

One reminder to some readers...gen1 MINI's (like the op's) do not have a sport button...it is ALWAYS SPORTY!!!
