Key Washed in Washing Machine

So fitting that my first post would be regarding a total idiot move.

So I just got a call from my boyfriend that he accidentally washed my extra key in the washing machine. Has this happened to anyone else? I know they are pretty expensive to replace so I was wondering if anyone had a solution on how to fix this (besides getting rid of the bf). LOL! Thanks!

My wife once dropped her cel phone in the toilet (don't ask) and I read online somewhere to put it in a low oven- like 200 degrees or lower and let it dry out. Don't push any of the buttons or they may stick before it's dry. Worked for the phone, might work for your key.

Put the key in a bag of rice overnight I think that would be alot safer than putting a key in the oven.

+1. I've washed a cell phone or two and this has worked for me.

Place the keyfob into an airtight container with plenty of rice.

Allow to remain overnight & then replace with fresh rice.

Repeat for several days...at least until you notice the rice is no longer "expanding".

Good luck!

Washed and dried my spare key. It only worked when plugged in to the car to start it, the comfort access and door lock/unlock buttons and boot buttons didn't work anymore.

I washed mine and didn't dry it out and it worked just fine. Haven't had a problem with it at all.

I avoided the spin cycle

I just did the same thing - but grabbed it before the spincycle. My Volvo key, too. Both seem to be working fine, but as a precaution, I threw them into a bowl of rice. zIf that doesn't work, I will post again - otherwise... let's motor!

Love happy endings!

PS I went swimming for 30 minutes with my mp3 player in the pocket of my trunks - it worked afterwards!

Believe it or not, these keys are supposed to be able to pass a washing machine test. I've worked in the automotive industry for years for companies that make the transmitter fobs and the keys are supposed to be waterproof.

Of course, they aren't always. And even when they pass, they don't really pass the test.

The best thing to do is to remove the battery and allow it to completely dry (using rice or other moisture absorbent methods). On our fobs, they don't really open, do they? So removing the battery is not an option.

Congrats on it still working. You dodged a bullet.

It's a real cheapo, 90% of the time I use it to listen to podcasts at the gym, got careless when I decided to swim in the lake instead! Anyway, here's the model.
