Every person will have their own opinion on this, so ill just share mine.

I have a R53,
I am gonna tell you the R53 is your better choice, only because it sounds like you want to mod it.

Do a search on this website, youll find your answer

R53=(2002-2006) supercharged
R56=(2007-) Turbocharged

I've got an older supercharged S, and LOVE the sound of it. That jet-engine whine is so pronounced, especially with a cold air intake and a smaller supercharger pulley.

Turbo guys sometimes like that Pssshhht sound from the blow off valve, but that's not for me...

Best suggestion? Test drive both.

I had an R53 (super) and now my 2011 R55 (turbo)

I wish they had just kept supers, i cannot stand the turbo and was worried when i purchased my second one that i wouldnt care for it and sure enough it will probably keep me from buying out my lease/getting another Mini Dont get me wrong, i love my car but turbo's arnt for me. I dont like how the car reacts and i cannot stand the stupid psshhht sound (i have a CAI on mine and you can really hear the turbo dump)

My R53 had a CAI, 15%Supercharger pulley and exhaust and it was by far the best combination you could get. It was quick and the supercharger wine is todye for To each his own, I know the ins and outs of both and the advantages/disadvantages and a supercharger just wins everytime for me. I will probably try and find a Nice R53 when my lease is up.

The turbocharged model is better for overall reliability and every day liveability.

The supercharged one is better for someone looking for a real enthusiasts car. I have an R53 and had an R56 loaner car and I can tell you that the steerong, clutch, and trans all feel more connected on the older model.

Plus the sound of the supercharger whine is something you can never grow tired of. If you were to get the supercharged one get an 05 or 06.
