Question about dealer oil change
Question about dealer oil change
I just recently had my oil changed on my mini cooper S. The next day I realized that the computer indicated I needed an oil change in 4700 miles. Is that because they failed to reset the computer or failed to change the oil?
Normal procedure these days. I just had the oil change paid by MINI at one year / 10,000 mi. with 8,000 still to go until normal service one. I guess they do the oil but everything else stays on schedule.
Check your oil with the dip stick to see if it is a golden color (versus dark). If golden color, you are good.
The other alternative is that something else is due in 4700 miles. To determine that, you need to go through the service menu (instructions in owners manual).
I think it's the computer not being reset as was mentioned above.
You guys happen to know if doing your own oil change voids any warranty by the dealership or a maintenance plan as far as free servicing up to x miles/years (whichever is first?) I have a friend who had this question and figured I'd ask. It's not a lease.

Most store receipts will also show what brand of oil was purchased, but if not and it's just generic labeling, the price will indicate you didn't buy a cheaper oil.
Keep all the receipts inside your owner's manual or in a zip lock bag. The receipts will also show the date purchased, so it's a good idea to pencil in the mileage at that time.
The idea is that you can prove documentation of the oil changes and used OEM filters.
But you might want to check with your local dealership and write down the name of who spoke to, just in the case, try to get the manager if you can.

The "oil" has no way to know if it has been changed or not. The service indicator is simply an algorithm of how many starts and for how long the engine runs. It does not in any way measure the condition of the oil. They must have failed to re-set the system.

The dealer oil changes are free, under the sevice warranty. I'll take mine to the dealer at 15K miles and change the oil myself twice before that. It'll still show, in their records, that the oil was changed in their recommended service interval. The warranty will be just fine.
