Trim them down, make them at least 500 lbs lighter (or more) and then they might have something.
I can agree with you there... All of the pony cars are too big/heavy, although the Mustang at 3600-3700lb is notably lighter than the others at 3900-4200lb. That being said, the new M3 weighs the same amount as the Mustang, so almost everyone has fallen into this weight gain situation.

Like I was saying, my '93 Mustang weighs ~2750lb, which is pretty darn close to some current MINIs. IMO, that shows not only that Mustangs are heavier than they should be, but also MINIs.

I will bet its not a 11' maybe 09 or 10' but it was clean and polished. The track stang was not a 500. Shelby GT but modified heavily. Not sure there was much stock there. The JCW had no fade on stock brakes. I do believe after 2 hard days they will need replacing soon with some yellow stuff. Dunlap RF's held up well except for the extra long session we had they were hot and greasy. I let a JCW Clubman by that we had been jocking around for a session. He was running very similar lap times. The little extra weight and wheel base does not seem to upset it at the track at all. Runs right with a JCW Hardtop. Running with the windows down my sunroof did flutter a little letting air and pressure out on high speed turns. You can see it moving up and down.

I agree with the size of the Pony cars. They need to down size a bit and go on a diet. Too heavy in todays world. I think my Maserati is lighter.

MINI is way to much fun on the road or the track. Love the Jan tune. I need to measure some 0 to 60 and 1/4 miles as she is very quick now.

Here's a Fox News release that confirms our suspicions about American pony cars being obese.

WASHINGTON - The number of obese American pony cars outweighs the number of those who are merely overweight, according to the latest statistics from the federal government.

Numbers posted by the National Center for Health Statistics show that more than 34 percent of American cars are obese, compared to 32.7 percent who are overweight. It said just under 6 percent are "extremely" obese.

"More than one-third of all cars, or over 72 million vehicles, were obese in 2005-2006, the NCHS said in its report.

The numbers are based on a survey of 4,356 owners over the age of 20 who take part in a regular government survey of health, said the NCHS, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The figures come from the 2005-2006 survey and are the most current available.

"During the physical examination, conducted in mobile examination centers, height and weight were measured as part of a more comprehensive set of body measurements," the NCHS report said.

"Although the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled since 1980, the prevalence of overweight has remained stable over the same time period," it said.

Both cars are cool for different reasons. I've owned both, even bidded on a '65 Fastback this weekend, similar to a car I had in HS and college. There will always be a place in my heart for Mustangs minus '72-'87 .

MINI by far is the most fun to drive. The Mustang was the coolest.

Different strokes for different folks..

Peace..

'72-'87 ?

The Mustang II went from '74 to '78... So your dates include two-thirds of the years of the bodystyle before the II and two-thirds of the bodystyle after the II (Foxbody).

Only one Mustang I would ever consider: A 68 396 GT, ala Bullett!

Next time one of your soon to be ex-friends makes fun? Challenge them to attend an autocross. Tell them "none of my quarter-miles are straight."

Something else for them to chew on: The average nascarp car is about 50 mph faster than the Mini I drive.

Best Mustang was the Fox body style. My first car was a '93 5.0 off the showroom floor when i was 16. Surprised I'm still alive. That car was a beast....

The '72 and '73 were huge, slow, ugly behemoths. I'd argue that '71 should be included too, so I can see the dislike of that version of that generation. I can also see where one wouldn't like the early Fox bodies with the dual headlights. The car got a lot more streamlined in '88.

Boy, have I had some fun with Mustangs! Mostly because any that I've been "in close contact" with were non-IRS, mostly stock, pre-2005 models. Buh-bye

I have, though, been meaning to take a 2011 out for a test drive. Even the V6 sounds like some fun. And if I won a new Boss, I probably wouldn't sell it

Actually, they got the new headlights in '87, so that's why I was confused, because '72 and '87 are "middle years". They didn't really signify the beginning ('72) or end ('87) of much. I wouldn't have questioned it if he said '71-'86 since that would be the beginning of the "big" generation and the end of the Four-eyed Foxes.

Fox bodies were "the best"?? The fact that you're surprised that you're still alive, and that you consider it to be a "beast", to me, argues the contrary. Except for added weight, the new version is better in every way, and the 2011s are truly world class cars. I have a lot of respect for what Ford has done with these new Mustangs...and for how far they've come since the dreaded Fox!

No doubt, the new Mustangs are all around way better than the Foxbody cars, but they do have a few things going for them:

-weight, like you said
-simplicity
-mod-ability (if that were a word)

The Foxbody reignited the Pony Car wars and helped pull American cars out of the Malaise Era of craptastic performance... and they're arguably the most common drag racing car in existence. So, yeah, it doesn't compare favorably to a 2011 Mustang, but not many cars released in 1979 do... and it's had a continuing influence on the performance car culture.

Wow, almost everyone here had a mustang and then went to Mini, that's crazy.

Usually people that own European/Japanese cars are not fan of American cars? Or I might be wrong? Just a thought...

Ya that's the other thing. In the MINI, you only pay when you play. These things can get 32mpg @ 80mph.

The mustangs are 15/23. My average MPG is higher than 23.

The only Ford I ever owned was a 1949 club coupe with a mildly hopped up flathead. I went to foreign cars early with my first one being a 73 VW bus which I ended up building a highly modified Porsche motor for. 'Great fun. I've haven't owned a US car since. They just weren't/aren't up to the same standards and quality and performance. Sad. The only American cars that I think I'd want to own nowadays are maybe a Dodge Viper, just for the insanity of it, and a 1953 Studebaker coupe which I'd totally and completely customize. (I've never seen a 'Stude yet that comes close to what I'd do to it. Maybe some day.....)
