After Engine Break in

When is the break in period official. Manual owners...what PRM are you shifting at and staying in a safe range. I never beat my cars or abuse them. I'm a speed limit compliant driver. I would like to open it up soon if I can find a place where it's safe & legal. Would like to take it on a road track sometime. Just passing 850 miles. Thanks.

The red line is 6500 rpm, it is safe to go to that when ever you want. How often is up to you and the way you drive. I take mine up there in 1st-4th pretty often but by then in 4th you are going pretty fast. I would say I normally shift at 5000 to 6000.

Personally (I own a turbo S) when I'm not opening it up I keep it below 3000-3500 RPMs in Sport Mode for the most fun and efficient driving. When I do open her up, I don't go over 5500-6000, but this is mostly because the turbo falls on its face after this point. As long as you don't put it in the red line area often, it is generally not considered "beating" on your car. There are precautions already put in place via the ECU that avoid the damage that could be caused by pushing it past your cars stock red line, so I wouldn't worry about it too much!

During the break-in period, you should exhibit normal everyday driving, regardless of what RPM the engine shifts at. Make no harsh attempts to accelerate, including passing people on two-lane highways, driving twisties, etc. This would place an increased "load" on the engine, and that can mess up the break-in period.

Back in the day, the Chevrolet overhaul manual said the break-in period was only 200 miles. Most people say 500 miles is a safe break-in mileage point, and that's what I go by.

.
first day I had it (200m) I wanted get away from a traffic light and got a little past 4500 not quite 5000 in 1st...ran 2nd up to same and let off. also used cruise control but not for more than 5-10 minutes....but kept varying the speed. I never do an open throttle on a road or highway...I'm too frkn old to lie to the police officer and say I had to get to a bathroom.
I bought the Coop with 134m on it. Hopefully it was Sunday driven by a retired soccer mom and not OverTested. Anyway, it seems to running ok. I'm going to take it easy for while and let the engine parts seat. Sure is fun for a 4cyl. BIG FUN. Thanks for your replies.

Don't worry about the break in period... Before I traded that Laurel in I redlined it in every gear every time .........

I just could not take the mismatched paint on the bumpers
