Unusual HIGH MPG!!!

I never really paid too much attention in the first 1000 miles driving my 2010 pepper white MINI... I was just recently starting to get into the display settings and came across my total/average MPG. I was floored to see that I get 49.0 MPG! I don't drive like a meme ( well maybe I do?! ) and i do put it often into sport mode...

Something's is not quite right! And I have been keeping it around that within the last 4 days oscillating between 48.8 to 49.0 MPG. I do a city/highway combo driving too...

That is quite unusual... especially when the engine isn't broken in. Mileage generally gets much beter after 20k miles I have noticed... (3rd MINI for me).

Congrats though! You must be rolling down a lot of hills in neutral!

Check it the old fashon way.

Amethyste, You need to not worry about what the computer says. You need to fill the tank all the way up, set the odometer to zero then Drive a couple hundred miles. Fill it up again and check how many mile you have gone. Divide how many miles by how many gallons and you will see that 49 mpg is just not happening in normal driving. It can be done at a steady 35miles per hour and feathering the gas pedal and leaving the AC off. ""MAYBE""

I would still get the dealer to check it out if the computer does not reset itself pretty soon.49MPG????? I don't think so.

Or you can use Fuelly.com. Just enter the numbers and it does it all for you.

+1 on what ronnie948 says. My OBD says I am getting 33-35mpg on my JCW with <800 miles on it. I checked this myself when I last filled up my tank it was closer to 30mpg. But, I am not complaining whatsoever with this rating, especially on a brand new engine, and with a car that is this much fun to drive!

Calculate the mileage yourself and see how close/far off the car computer is.

Is your computer set to show US gallons or UK gallons?

Agreed my MINI comp said that the mileage was around 34mpg for the break in period. Did the math my self and was closer to 32. Definitely no complaints here getting 32mpg without being a hypermiler. I am sure if I eased off the gas pedal a little I could squeak a little more out of it, but where's the fun in that?

I don't know I get better mileage with sport on but that might be because I am not speeding up and slowing down all the time and it takes less pedal to maintain that speed. 49 is pretty high though. That wasn't within the first hundred miles after fueling up because it will be a little higher. It also averages the whole tank by your driving style on that tank.

Thank you everyone for your responses...

I have to admit, I am a cruise control Junkie though... I rarely touch my gas pedal! I set in on and go up and down with it depending on what I need to speed up to. Of course, since I have a manual, I only use it in 4th and above...

Maybe that helps too... When I switch the display for "live" mpgs, I am almost always averaging in the upper 50's and above...

Anyone drives ( or not drive lol ) like I do?

Excuse me for being a MINI noob, but my BMW's mpg can be reset by pressing the button on the stalk. Can you do this on the MINI? If so, does it change the outcome?

Definitely check out the mpg by hand.

Is your odometer correct? Use a highway mile marker to check. Maybe it is off. Maybe you have imperial gallon readings?

You may have the system set to UK gallons instead of US.
Look at the language setting in the speedometer menus, not tach.
[Lang] must be set to US. If not the OBC will read several MPG high as the UK gallon is ~ 5 quarts vs the 4 qt US gallon.

Edit:
.....Just checked my system and changing from US to UK gave a 7 MPG difference. 34.8 (US) vs 41.8 (UK) MPG. The OP's reading is still a bit high even if the settings were wrong....

I think if you try the old tried and true method of calculating mpg you will probably find you are around 37 mpg rather than 49. Yes using cruise control will produce good mileage, elctronics do a better job with he accelerator than the human foot/brain combo.

You guys get crazy mileage in the 2nd gen cars. I'm lucky to hit 25 mpg in the city, 22 is a more realistic average, and that's while driving easy. I've gotten as low as 18 mpg over a tank driving very very spirited, and recently getting 32mpg on the highway. Resetting the ave. mpg and then pulling through 1st to redline yields a displayed 8mpg.

I think my engine's fuel economy is dying off. Yet these are close to the figures that the window sticker claimed: 25mpg city, 34mpg highway.

The computer is off though. In my 2010, it was saying I was getting like 55 MPG. I was really getting about 45 when I calculated it by hand - still crazy good, but not as outrageous as it was saying. Definitely calc it by hand.

US vs UK MPG

Maybe this will help.

I went to the garage just now and photographed the computer's MPG

For the middle photo I switched the computer to the UK system.

The right-hand photo shows UK MPG.

I suspect that UK is what your computer is set to show. Since UK gallons are larger than US gallons, the MPG will always be higher when it's set to UK gallons.

I also get pretty crazy mpg's on highway driving. I've gotten into the upper 40s on all my trips to the dealer. 100 miles up an interstate with no ac and the cruise on say 65. Had a trip to FL. 400 miles on I-10 and I-75 and the OBC said 49.5 mpg. Here again cruise on about 65, no ac.

I've found my OBC to be optimistic about 3-4 MPGs when I fill up and do miles/gallons. So it is possible to get insane MPGs out of a second gen justa cooper. It is very easy to beat the epa estimates. My in-town average, which includes alot of freeway driving, is about 40 on the OBC, 36-38 on fill up calculation.

I use Fulley online and Gas Cubby on my Iphone as well. I don't buy the mileage you are getting. We've had our cars over a year now and have been tracking the mileage since the cars were new.

My wife gets 30 to 31 in her MCS automatic and I get 30 to 32 in my MCS manual. We have a combination of highway and city, cruise and no cruise, spirited and regular driving. I think this more typically represents what MOST individuals will get with a Gen 2 car.

I think flyinace2000 is just about right on.

I only check my 2009 JCW using the old pen & paper and it depends on my driving if I get 26 or 34 MPG average on a fillup. I.m thinking my total average is about 29/30 mpg in my 13,000 + miles of driving. I'm pretty happy with the mileage I get along with the performance of this car. I have gotten up to 36 mpg but only a couple of times. I have never gotten under 26mpg at all.
