Should I return my custom plate?
Should I return my custom plate?
About a month ago, when I didn't have a car I made an impulse buy on a custom plate. Mostly because I couldn't believe it was still available and because I giggled like a school girl at the thought of it. When I got it I was planning on getting an E46 BMW.
The plate reads
NO E30
Well, now I've purchased a MINI and the plate hasn't come in yet. I don't know if it is too late to cancel it or not. I still really like the plate, I just don't know if it belongs on a Cooper. Thoughts? I bet I could find someone to buy it off of me. I already have a friend who wants to put the front plate on his LEMONS E30.
For those who don't know, it's an old BMW joke. The BMW E30 (1984-1991 3 series) is regularly called the "pinnacle of automotive engineering" or "god's chariot" and is used as a bench mark for such cars as the Bugati Veyron and Ferrari Enzo, to which the typical response is, "it's no E30".

Just a few questions...
Is the vanity plate from the DMV or aftermarket (ie: not street-legal as a stand-alone)?
If it's from the DMV, you may want to contact the DMV to see if the application has been processed. If it hasn't, you may still be able to cancel the order.
Most DMVs don't allow transferring plates from one owner to another, so you may want to double-check the rules of your state's DMV.
Here in VA, I can transfer any plate from one vehicle I own to another...for a fee. What I *cannot* do is transfer my plate to someone else...not even to a family member living in the home IF my name isn't on the vehicle title & registration.

Similar to Sneezy's comments typically the plate stays with the person, not the car therefore not transferrable to another person but can be transferred to another car of the same owner. At least that's how it is in CO. I would check with DMV if it's been issued and go from there.
I do know of people who have sold plates before, there is actually a bit of a market for good vanity plates. I do need to call the DMV and check, I tried but the wait is always soooo long.
