Automatic Transmissions

I'm considering purchasing a 2003 mini copper, automatic transmission. I have been told that the automatics are extremely problematic and i shouldn't wast my money. A manual is not an option, and i heard those have even more problems! any comments? anyone have any first hand experience dealing with mini cooper automatic transmissions on the 2003 model?

The Cooper (non-S) automatic transmission *is* problematic. They fail at random and are very costly (upwards of $5-8k) to replace. The no longer are produced, and they do not make parts for them, so the only option is a remanufactured replacement. Mine is starting to fail and is being traded in in another week.

I would say if you can avoid it, do. Learning to drive manual would be less of a hassle in the long run. My recommendation: go with an S, or an 07+ (different transmissions in these models).

Do a search here for "CVT" or Google it...you'll find lots of info.

Can't speak at all to reliability issues, but I test drove a CVT Cooper back in 2003/2004 or so and HATED it.

MINI started offering a real, honest-to-goodness 6-speed automatic with the 2005 S models (I had one in my '06 MCS). Definitely better, but IMO it wasn't a very good match for the engine.

The same unit carried over to the second generation (R56) in 2007. I've got one in my Clubman, and they really went the extra mile to make sure the engine and transmission play nice.

If you're dead set on an automatic, I'd highly recommend going with a 2007+ model.

05 or newer would be just fine. I prefer the 05 06 MCS car's to the newer ones. I like the body style and handling better.

Yes, as long as it is an S. But if the OP wants a justacooper, they'll need a 2nd gen car (2007+) to get the Aisin tranny.
