MINI + Deer = :(
Deer and cars don't mix, sorry about your MINI and I hope your insurance covers the repair cost. Deer jumping out in front of you is all to often here in the mountain areas so you drive accordingly in the marked deer crossing zones. But at least deer are relatively small, you don't want to play bumper tag with moose, elk or the stray loose cow.
Sorry to hear about your mini, but count your blessings. DO NOT slow down if you are going to hit a deer. Speed up. If you hit the deer slow enough it will slide up onto your hood and possibly through your windshield. No airbag will protect you from those horns or hoofs.
The idea behind speeding up is to hit them hard enough to push them out of the way or over your roof. Sounds crazy, but those in densely populated areas will confirm the technique. EE

I've heard of people purchasing deer whistles 4 their cars that (somehow) deter deer from just bounding out in front of u. They're relatively inexpensive and can be purchased here: http://www.deerwhistle.com/. Think I'm gonna get one, since Spring's comin' up soon and there'll be lots of runs in 'remote' areas! I've only known one person who purchased one of these and swears by it.
I'm skeptical about the effectiveness of deer whistles, except their effectiveness at uglifying the front of your car -- that's proven.
I know people with deer whistles on their cars that have never hit a deer (I know one who has). But I've NEVER had deer whistles on my cars and I've NEVER hit a deer either (knock on wood) -- and we got 'em around here! I live in a semi-rural subdivision. Last week we had a herd of 14 deer in our little backyard.
I believe only cautious driving may help you avoid an unpleasant meeting with them, but it's probably more luck than anything else. The brainless animals will be sent bounding into the woods when a mouse farts a half mile away, but they'll walk in front of an 40-ton semi, roaring down the interstate at 75mph.
I hope your MINI gets well soon, Brad.
