Did you really say that?!

Here's a little unorganized side rant. I overheard a conversation in our job trailer this morning where the OAR was complaining about the 120k+ she has to pay in taxes per year. I think that's like 6x more than I pay and I do more work than her. I'm afraid that's something I'll never get to complain about staying in this field! Hell, my firm hasn't even given raises in 3 years citing the economy. I think last year our firm which has mid-30s # of employees got a few hundred million in new contracts and their fees are by no means cheap. Sigh.

I work as a Repair Development Engineer for a large Aero Engine/Aerospace company. Basically damaged turbine engines (many from the ones you fly on via delta etc) and evaluate damage and forumlate technical repair documents for repair shops to repair them.
I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Masters in Product Development.
Work for a copier/printer company developing new photo imaging belts and drums for new products.

Seriously! Yesterday she was complaining about how she's going to go broke because she had to pay a $250 fine for her dog barking.

I'm still trying to figure out what kind of money you've got to earn to pay 120K in taxes! And she's an Architect? She must have some gigantic investments on the side or something.

She's actually a General Contractor hired by the city as their representative to review and keep the General Contractor for the job "honest." I'm an architect and I make less than anyone else at the construction site except maybe the security guards...

As the proud son of a Vietnam veteran, I would just like to say to all of those on here that served, Thank You. I know what kind of sacrifices are made, and they do not go un-noticed. Now if we could only pay our Marines, soldiers, sailors, and flyboys what they are worth.

That makes a little more sense, but is no less discouraging. Especially since you probably do more as the certifying Architect to keep the contractor "honest" than she does.
But I digress. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, MINI's. Ahem, yes, I like driving my MINI!

~400k *.3 (30%) =~120k.... granted if you're making 400k you're probably in a higher tax bracket and paying more than 30% tax... but so say its 350k, still!!

All of you have much cooler (and higher paying) jobs than I do (Front Desk Person / Night Audit) at a hotel. Before that I was a kitchen manager at my parent's restaurant for 5 years in Savannah, GA. Nothing glamorous about either. Going to school to be an elementary school teacher. Wish it paid more.... but enjoy summers off

anyone want to give me a nicer job?

I work in emergency management for a nuclear utility, training and supporting local and state government emergency management personnel.

And I work in a building on my own, and I can park my MINI right outside my window

I sweep floors for 8 hours a day, and listen to my iPod the whole time. I go through a lot of audiobooks and podcasts. It is not glamorous, but it keeps me in excellent shape, and gives me time for reading I wouldn't have otherwise.
