GP MINI ??

I think we all know that the GP MINI is a special car. But we're speculating on another board what the "GP" stands for - no one seems to know...

Grand Prix? Anyone?

According to the original press release, I read that the GP stands for Grand Prix.

You can find a copy of the original release here:

http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/to...Tuning-Kit.htm

You might find the release on BMW's press site as a cross-reference.

Thanks, Matt. It doesn't look like I'd have to go any further than that link to know that it is indeed Grand Prix.

Now since they produced only 2,000 GP's in 2006, do you think MINI would ever release another 2,000 Gen 2 GP's?

I wouldn't be surprised if they do another limited run end of the 2nd gen. But, I doubt they will use the name 'GP' again.

G2 gets my vote for the name. I do hope they do another limited edition - it would be a shame to see the Gen 2 get treated like a second cousin...

Yes, GP stands for Grand Prix, the first Cooper appeared in a at Monaco Grand Prix in 1950 in Formula 3 and on Formula 2, later in 1954 in F1. BMW MINI's GP moniker corralates its racing herritage too, John Cooper's racing heritage pre-MINI era.

According to motoringfile, the R56 'performance' edition will be called the "World Championship 50" or WC50, and have a limited run of 250 cars, none of which will come to the US.

Of course, MINI has been doing a lot of special editions recently, and there will likely more before the current models move on to the next generation.

edit - looking at the story at little more closely, it appears that the WC50 is a loaded JCW - with a loaded sticker price - but I don't see much that would actually enhance its performance.

Time for you to go to competition driving school. Then you'll bre ready for an upgrade from the GP.
