I took my car to show my mother for the first time today. First thing that came out of her mouth, "Oh that's cute!" She opened the door and sat inside and she really liked it. Then I showed her the engine bay and she asked, "Wow that's tiny, what's the size?" I answered 1.6 supercharged. She then said "Oh that isn't going to get anywhere!" I then said "Let me take you for a spin." After the drive, her opinion was a complete 180, I LOVED it!

Now about this whole gay/girly thing, I really do think it's really sad. I don't spend my hard earned money and then worry about how other's view my purchase, I get what I want and that's final. I could give a rats behind what others think, I'm more than happy with my Cooper.

Anyone who knows anything about cars knows that Mini's are an absolute riot. The ladies think it's cute, the guys think about The Italian Job, and I have yet to hear a single girl car/gay comment. My parents both drive sporty-ish cars with manual transmissions (Audi A4 and Boxster S), so they were completely understanding/encouraging of my interest in the Mini. The only hesitation I got was from my mother who was a bit concerned about the safety aspects. All I had to do was show her the crash test results and she was sold. Anytime I go home for holidays, she always comes up with reasons to drive it.

Not once I have heard anything about it being "girlie" or anything like that. Everyone loves my Mini and cant believe the room it has inside.

Never had a bad reaction with this car

It's more fun to see their reactions. Those that are happy for you, those that don't really get it, those that are narrow minded.

More often than not, the responses are positive, and the MINI, I think, is generally non-threatening to others.

MINI attracts all different kinds of people for all different kinds of reasons.

I did take it to a local track event, and not one single negative comment, amongst exotics and other sports cars. Comments were positive.

Feel free to add comments on the blog. Then the author and newspaper will know that MINI's are of interest to readers. Actually I was surprised at the relative lack of comments to the story, but not sure how large the readership is, on the internet.

My mom looked at my dad and said "Now you have to buy me one". Dad looks at me and says "Damnit son you couldn't have hidden it?" Mom now has a HB cabrio sitting in the driveway.

How could anyone have a negative reaction to such a great car. Everyone I know thinks it's amazing, no exceptions.

too many to list

When I purchased my first Mini in 2002, I heard just about everything... 'you've got to be kidding me' 'can you take that on the freeway?' 'is that electric?' 'you better not get in an accident vs a SUV'.

That was in 2002, the Minis were new to everyone, so I let it slide and gave them a ride. Usually shut em up.

Flash Forward 7 years and I get to experience it all again! I recently replaced the 2002 for a 2009 Clubman... most common response: 'oh, of course'.

My dad is over 6 feet, my brother is right about 6 feet. They took my car up to Fort Lewis (from Portland where I live) about 3 hours away. They both raved about how comfortable and fun my lease was. Dad saw "Simone" and instantly got a knowing grin on his face...too bad he didn't have enough time to drive her...

My mom was all for it, because I was able to pay it off in cash and not go for the BMW and be in debit like I wanted too. haha My dad was also a fan of Mini's for awhile and he supported it. He even drove it a few times. But, he did see a really flamboyant guy driving a mini one day, I heard some jokes after that. He doesnt know about Alphamotoring and myself yet. j/k

My very practical, frugal, 69 year-old, 6'2" tall, retired engineer father from DETROIT (I come from three generations of automakers), upon getting into an 08 MCS for a test drive said simply, "This is the car you should have bought when you bought that Maxima." (I had sold a a 2004 Nissan Maxima SL to buy my MINI.) 'nuff said.
