What Whalen do I have?

Hi all, I'm trying to order a E-brake handle to match my shift ****. What finish is this shift ****? Is it polished, brushed, bead blasted? I do know it's SS. account of the weight. Please help, thanks.

It's not shiny enough to be polished.

It's not rough enough to be brushed finish.

I believe it's simply "unpolished".

I say it's brushed because you can see the circular brush marks. However it is not a good photo for identification. Can you take another photo in good light with no flash?

Hmmm... I thought brushed would be a little more textured and not at all reflective.

I'm not sure which one it is but if you'd prefer polished I'll swap you mine.

I have to admit that it's hard to tell from that picture. I'm guessing polished, but I can't say for sure.
Did you buy it from me? And if so, how long ago?

I bought it from someone here on NAM, here are some more pics. If these don't help I guess I could take the **** off and take some more, but kinda forgot how to take it off

I'm thinking that's polished; doesn't look brushed to me.

To take it off, simply grab it in the palm of your hand; with your thumb and two fingers, slide the collar (the part with the o-rings) up into the ball. It only slides up about 1/8" into the ball.
Hold the collar up, and simply slip the **** off the lever.

Well, Doug should know !!

The reason I didn't think it was polished is because it's not nearly as glass-smooth or as reflective as my polished Whalen ****:

Doug, have you seen any of your ***** develop surface wear over time? It almost looks like a **** that started as brushed but got shinier from use. In the original post, you can definitely see what looks like circular brush marks. Or it could be one that started as polished but lost some of the mirror finish through wear.

JIMINNI, does the finish on the underside of the **** look exactly like the top? If different, it could have been caused by wear.

Can't say that I've ever noticed any wear.
Of course, I don't often leave one on my car long enough to show wear; that's the "curse" of having a shop full of them, I guess.

It's hard to say definitively about that particular ****. It's not obviously polished OR brushed; it could very well be a brushed one that has been "smoothed up" from use, I suppose.

Know what I'm thinking? It looks to me like whoever painted in the engraving did some "polishing" with something that left those concentric rings on it.

I'm thinking it started out as polished; it just isn't as shiny as it once was.

Which finish do you really prefer? I can easily take that **** and brush it up, if that's the way you'd like it.
I could also take it back to the polisher; but re-buffing it might "wash out" the engraving a bit.

My suggestion: choose the finish you want for your e-brake, and send the **** back to Doug for a matching refinish.

Hmmm..... I think I like brushed more than polished. Do you think a brushed E-brake would look ok sitting next to it? Are you saying to ship it back to you? Couldn't imagine being without my Whalen anymore How much to redo mine?

Yep, if you can live without it for a few days.

No charge to re-brush it; take me maybe two minutes.
And no charge for return shipping, if I'm sending you an e-brake handle anyway.

I don't think a brushed e-brake handle would match well with the **** in its present finish. Just my own opinion, though.

Now that I have it here, I can say that it definitely started out as brushed, but has been worn down.

It's uniformly worn down; the entire ball, even underneath. I'd guess the previous owner did some polishing to it.

The story has a happy ending Doug rebrushed the shift **** and matched it perfectly to a e-brake handle.
