Targa Newfoundland

I caught a little of the Targa Newfoundland on Speed Sunday afternoon. One fun spots was where one of the 2nd gen Minis decided to let a new factory backed Dodge (not sure of it was a Charger or Cuda) start the leg before the Mini because the Mini didn't want the Dodge to past him in a few minutes (they were using a rally style start with a few minutes or seconds between each car). Well as it turns out, the Mini (which started after the Dodge) ended up passing the Dodge a few minutes after the Mini started.

A not so fun part was where one of the Minis (may have been the same Mini as above) went off course and flipped end over end.

It held up great. Both drivers were OK, one was taken in for a checkup, but was fine.

Every time I hear about a MINI in a crash I'm impressed with how they hold up.

And the poor guys running the classic Mini, they went thru thermostats, bearings, head gaskets, axles, a clutch and finally a motor, and they still had to push it over the finish line!

It was the same Mini that made the pass. Perhaps he should have followed The Mini driver was very experienced and had driven in all of the prior Targa events. If you can catch last years broadcast it was just as entertaining. Peter and I thought about entering 3 years ago but it is at least a 3 week time commitment when coming from the west coast. You easy coast guys should look into it as it is a spectacular event.

If you missed it, Speed Channel is still running it.

I was amazed at how well the Austin-Healey held up. I don't think I would have run it, though. Subaru, sure. XKE, no.
