What would you rather own?
I actually thought this commercial was really funny!
At first it seemed like a spoof that would be on SNL or MadTV or something.
This is envy and desperation at its finest "my friends"... take one of the coolest cars around and try to make yours look better. Big one/ little one... hmmm... who's compensating? NOT the MINI!
I was totally thinking that I would rather have two MINIs doing donuts around that beast. (Come to think of it... I actually do have two right now.) Liked the joke about using up more gas trying to find a parking place! Good one! (Plus if you have two Coopers... you now have your very own Cooper Parade... and who could dislike that?)
Unfortunately most all marketing has only the slightest hint of truth... just enough to legally get away with it.

For the cost of the hybrid, you could buy a MINI and a part ownership in a gas stations...
By the way, they're comparing it to a R52 automatic... a car no longer being built. But then again if GM continues down the same road they're on, the Escalade won't be built for much longer...

Cadillac missed the mark on several points:
If you have $73k for the hybrid version, you don't CARE about gas mileage. In any case, I would not pay that much extra money for a few lousy extra MPG.
Their main competition is not Mini, it's Toyota and Honda etc. Their vehicles do almost as well in MPG at a fraction of the cost and without hybrid tech.
I believe the Mini in question is the supercharged version and even at that, it can do as high as 29 highway (Cadillac is only 21).
I did not buy a Mini to haul around 8 people. I don't believe the Cadillac can do so comfortably either.
Why didn't they use all that development money to build something people actually want instead of that rolling oxymoron.
Sorry, just venting.

No, that's still the first gen cabrio w/ the first gen engine! MINI coupes have had the new engine for over two years....the cabrio will finally catch up this Spring. So basically they took the suckiest numbers they could possibly find for any MINI and used that. Really, the ad is a gross misrepresentation. I've seen few cars that can touch the mpg numbers a manual Cooper is capable of. On the other hand, it is rather shameful that any MINI lists at 21 mpg city....glad those days are over.
Escalade gets better MPG than MINI Cooper!
May get a Clubman so am noticing all things MINI. Saw an ad that the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid gets better MPG than the Mini S convertible.
I did not believe it, so went to the govt website. It is true! How can a Mini S Convertible only get 19mpg in the city?
Tell me that a Clubman S, even driven aggressively, gets better than 19mpg in the city.

The Escalade ad is shameful, imo...worthy of a complaint. The second gen engine and first gen engines are very different critters. I drive a manual Cooper coupe that gets 38-40 mpg around town!!!
Check around here in the Clubman forum to see what kind of mpg you can expect in everyday city driving...I suspect high 20s might be typical for Clubman S w/ an automatic tranny. Some folks get in the upper 30s on the highway in the same car.

Yeah, I saw that commercial, too. My fiancé was like "Hey look that huge car gets better gas mileage than your MINI!" I had to show her the fine print stating that it was a supercharged 2008 Cabrio. It was indeed a shameless ad produced by GM. I've never gotten any WORSE than 35 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg in the city in my '03 MC. Check the numbers against your Clubman. MINI wins.
But what they don't tell you is the freeway mileage!
21mpg....
Yes, it gets one mpg better on the freeway.
Oh yeah, one other little tiny detail. The Escalade Hybrid cost $77,195.

My 2005 MCS Convertible gives me between 25 and 28 - but that's not stop-and-go city traffic.
As mentioned, the 2007+ engines do much better economy wise than the original engine; for the three weeks I owned one, I was getting about 32 on the same route were I would have got 25 in the convertible.

OMG I will be delirious if I can get those mpg results with my new clubman!!!!
And...with a manual tranny and in Cooper config it'll do even better!! I hope one of those clever automotive writers figures the charade of this Escalade ad out and blows GM's cover big time....it'd serve them right for going there!!
GM ad campaign bashing the MINI Cooper
Just saw a new GM ad on the TV showcasing the latest Escolade Hybrid claiming they have better MPG than any other car on the market... "...and it is not a Mini Cooper". Looks like GM is outright bashing Mini Coopers
Has anyone else seen the new GM comercial?

Yes I just saw it yesterday and couldn't quit laughing about it! Really amazing that they are comparing the two. I do like how they fail to mention the fact that the Escalades mileage on the highway sucks and that it is almost 2.5-3 times the cost to purchase. Would have been nice if they would have compared it to the base mini but they didn't.....hmmmm I wonder why.
Hybrid Escalade
C'mon people, the Escalade is running mostly on the electric motor in town. Mini can compare it later when the electric Mini is out, that would be as fair an ad as Cadillac is showing now. Apples to oranges.
Our Clubbie S averages 30. I have got as low as 26 on a tank of gas when driven hard. On a short run I have gotten as low as 15, but, that was very hard driving over about 20mi (a lot of time in 2nd and 3rd gear too).
This reminds me of an informal test done with a Prius and Audi A4. They were driven on a road course with the Prius driven as fast as it would go and the Audi just behind it (ie, same course speed). The Audi got 1mpg better mileage than the Prius.
Yep, hybrids can get good gas mileage, IF, you drive them carefully. If you drive them the way I drive my Clubbie (or even my Toy Tundra) they get average mileage.
Don't forget that advertisers are not bound to tell the truth. They can pick what they choose to say and ignore all the other stuff. And, it works. Especially in this case. It pits a 'foreign' car against a 'US' car. Basically tells people what they want to hear so they will believe it to be gospel.

zug4zig hit the nail on the head. The comparison is not "apples to apples" when compared with a Hybrid. However, my friends with MC's in town are getting about 28 - 30 MPG city; pretty darn good for any combustible engine....
Not quite, at least not in our first 600 miles. We drove our 09 Clubman home on the interstate from the dealership for a hour averaging over 70 and got 36mpg. We have about 600 miles on it now and it is averaging 33.8 around town. Ours is a manaul non s. Then again, we are a mile above sea level in CO and I'm sure it would do better at sea level.
