The MINI Epiphany

Ok so after wanting and wanting a MINI i realized you know what, it's gonna be ok if i have to get a used MINI, it will not be the end of the world.

So after this realization i started looking around on the used car sites and what the freaking heck?!!?? The used minis are just as much as the new ones, if not more, seriously. So i wanted to ask once you find a mini that looks good to adopt and then you look at the price sticker and go , do you haggle the price down, and how much has everyone else been able to get the price down?

I know that minis are one of the best cars that retain there value, and that is awesome, but the prices of these used minis i mean selling an 07 for $31K. What the freaking heck?!

So please put in your wonderful insight in mini community....
Yours truly,

Depends what you want...and how used you want the car to be. Lots of dealer car (and others) are optioned up and that jacks the price up, too. You can spec out a new, lightly appointed Cooper (my favorite of the bunch) for $21K easily. Some dealers are offering discounts on their inventory, but again many of those cars are optioned to the point that even with a discount they are still more than a new car you could design yourself. Keep looking....you'll find something nice in your price range eventually.

If you want ALL of the options on the used one, it doesn't hurt to adopt a previously loved MINI. BUT if you are thinking that you may want an option that is not on the MINI you've inspected, then price a New MINI. Typically I think that a FSBO would give you a better opportunity to haggle rather than a dealership, not sure though since Molly is our 1st MINI. We did look at a couple of used, they just weren't taken care of as well as Molly is going to be and at the time we just weren't serious about buying right then and there.

I would've loved to buy new, but no way I could afford it. New Cooper S with cold weather package, cruise (not sure if that's standard or not), and a few other things would have been around 35k CDN. I ended up buying an '03 S with 50,000km for 18k this past March.

It depends on what you require in terms of trim and how hard you look. I found an '07 MCS with 13,000 miles in perfect condition at a dealership 600 miles from me for 19k (a little over 3k under MSRP), but I was willing to go without options in order to get into a MINI. And no, MINI dealerships don't really haggle. I got them to come down $500 but I think it was only because MINIs with no options are hard to move and I paid cash.

Hmmm..... thanks guys. I dont really want any big buck options, mostly just the cold weather pkg because of colorado winters. I would like the xenon lights but that is merely a want not a need. I'm thinking now that i should just order because i have been looking and for a non-optioned out mini the new one is actually the same price as a used. If i do find a used one that is at a reasonable price then i will go for it...

Yours truly,

I'd go as far back as an '04 model, but no further. And even better, the '05 model added a very small refresh, (nicer headlamp styling, improved gearing on the manual tranny, [at least in the case of an S], and even better reliability).

The 2002 and 2003 models in general, seem to have many more problems with reliability.

A new one with the cold weather option and not much else will run 21-22,000for an MC and 24-25,000for an MCS. Plus you get the color you want and a longer warranty. If new and used prices are that close, go with the new.

MINIs do hold their value crazy good. Mine is listed on NADA for $17.8k after almost 4 years and ~45k miles. It's listed at $17,495 here in the marketplace if you're interested in looking...I'm in the Denver-area too
