How long do I got doc?

Hey guys- so I just picked pick up a used cooperS. I noticed my passenger side muffler has a rotton spot on it; while the other side is fine. I'm guessing someone backed into something and it has since been rusting, but how long will it take to rust through?? It seems like it is going through layers of metal, i can stick my finger through what looks like three layers but still feel solid muffler in there. Any one have this problem at all? and how long do I have before it rusts through if it does?

heh, funny this comes up, I had my car up on stands the other day and noticed that I had "cancer" as well. Mine is a little farther along than yours, and up around the pipes. Mine has gotten to a point to where there is a gap between what appears to be an outer and an inner skin, however, there is a lot of rust on the inner skin as well.

I too am wondering how long it might be before I need to replace. Wouldn't mind an excuse to get the Invidia Exhaust...

You should one-ball the good one that is left.

I've got an 02 Cooper, but mine has been that bad for more than a year now and I am still waiting for it to rot through.

hijacking my own thread, but I don't understand the benefit to this. Aren't there two mufflers for a reason? I'm not throwing the idea away either, i'm seeing catbacks aren't the cheapest.

It is purported to be louder and lighter.

oh ok, do you know how much weight is saved by doing this? and does it create any flow problems? I've got a hefty CAI system and wouldn'e want to limit the air movement in the motor, would that be happening?

This might help:

I know little about the mod, since I have a Borla exhaust.

There has been speculations that a one-ball exhaust mod also gives better HP on a dyno then a catback system. This was done with a RMW Head I believe. I read it somewhere on the forum...can't find where... but either way I think the one-ball mod is done by cutting off the other resinator, not the one that is rusting through.

That cleared it all up! thank you guys! I would much rather go for a completely new system, but it she rusts through quicker than I see that the 'one ball' is a safe coversion to solve the problem
