Ever wonder why the price of lumber and generators go up before a hurricane?
Must be those damn oil companies!

You do know the penalty for being seen at Wally World in your MINI is not a pleasant one?

Had to drive from Charlotte, NC to Tampa Friday. As I got into Tampa area, I paid 4.10 for premium.

Not as bad as I thought it would be.

After all the rumors and stuff, gas only went up 25-30 cents at most stations where we live. There were a couple of stations that really jacked the price up, but then lowered it again several hours later when they saw the other stations didn't raise their prices as much.

Our Local Station is selling V-Power 92 Octane for $3.95, $.04 cents more than when we filled Molly up last night ($3.91). We'll see if the conditions in TX will affect us.

In AL the Shell station i went to has increased their prices about 70 cents a gallon. The cheap station, Kangaroo right down the street has increased theirs only about 30. Fortunately I filled the mini up a few days before the storm. Saturday morning I filled the two hondas up at Kangaroo.

I noticed when I went out Saturday morning, many stations were out, Kangaroo was not. I think many stations are reporting out to conserve, because some of those stations were pumping gas a couple of hours later, with no deliveries.

Oil this morning is down to 96 dollars a barrel. A five dollar drop over the weekend amid reports of limited damage to the oil infrastructure in the gulf. The Houston refineries had little to no damage, but they have no power.

I've always used Shell, but will now switch. They have been the biggest gouger in the area. They increased after Gustav, for no apparent reason or disruption of supply, and now they have the biggest increases in our area. There is a top tier Conoco near by that has only a 30 cent increase, I'll now use them in the mini from now on.

True supply varies locally also based on distribution channels. In North Carolina, we're dependent on a pipeline from the gulf coast for much (not all) of our refined petrol products. When they turn off the other end of that pipe (which they did over the weekend) the real ability to get supply into our state doesn't match demand... especially when our brilliant Lt. Governor (who's running for Governor) says in an interview on Friday that everyone should go the the gas station and fill up their cars to make sure they don't run out over the weekend and it creates a run...

They only shut down 13 refineries and a small section of pipeline. This was price gouging. They used the panic caused by Ike to get people to stock up on gas and then raised the price. If you owned a grocery store and did this with items like milk, water, and bread you could face criminal charges. In the past when a major storm like this threatened a vital area, some oil is released from the reserves to bulk up production before the storm hits. This was a scam and should be investigated.

The local Shell station raised the price of 92 50 cents from Friday night 9/12 to Sunday 9/14. $3.31 to $3.81.
Of course I filled up on Sunday but it sure doesn't hurt as bad as filling up my truck. That usually needs 2 swipes of the card.
The MINI got 33.5 MPG for that tank and my truck is lucky to get 12 if I do a lot of downhill driving...

Ok people, Oil is not traded in today's money, it's always for a future date. When they raise the prices along the distribution channels, it raises the price all along the way, and does in fact curb demand. Thats why when there is a "run" on gas by uneducated people, the price keeps going higher and higher because a station never wants to run out of gas, and there is a point of no return that will keep people from "running" for gas, which is what a station can charge to keep their business as normal. Give it a week and everything will be back to normal. This is how commodities work people. Remember 9/11? Gas shot up like 6 dollars a gallon in 2 hours in my town, and then the next day was seriously back to the original price. Just get enough to make it through a few days and then fill up again when it drops back down.

Hate to disagree, but that is indeed price gouging.

Check out the wiki link, it contains a pretty good legal description of the term, and it is a felony punishable by the state and federal government:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_gouging

In short, anyone who tries to profit from a disaster or the anticipation of a disaster is practicing price gouging. What those companies or gas stations do is indeed criminal, and I know of one instance where I live where a gas station owner was prosecuted for price gouging.

My daughter called me this weekend and told me that where she lives (Huntsville, AL), prices were almost $5 a gallon in some places.

I for one am against hanging any of those miscreants... however, I wholly support using appropriately applied tether hooks and letting them hang in there until the prices go back down.

This is what I don't understand..
Gas is always about .40 cents cheaper here in South Carolina than back home in Florida.
Thats mainly because SC has fewer taxes than FL on fuel and so that explains the difference.
So why is it that in the recent price increase because of the Hurricane that gas in SC was raised to the same exact amount as in FL and NC?

That my friend is price gouging and it should be illegal but we all know that when you have family in government you don't have to worry about stuff like that.

Here's another thing.. Now that the trucks are once again delivering fuel.. Why is the F**ken gas still way up there?

And WHY! Are we bailing out AIG that shares none of its profits with us when they are doing good?
Did you know that the amount of bail out money is equivlant to what it would cost to rebuild San Fransico from the ground up if an earth quake ever did it in.

Don't get too cozy. OPEC is holding a meeting tomorrow to determine if they're going to cut production. It's iffy since the global economy is in the can and a spike in prices could cause things to get worse. But I assure you the folks pumping the oil don't like the current price one bit, and the moment the speculators on the NYMEX get a whiff of production cuts, you're going to see the prices spike at the pump.

In the meantime, I'm hoping the low prices will at least hold up through MINIs Slay the Sleeping Dragon this weekend.

gas is plummeting like a rock here in CO. on sunday I paid 2.91/gal for RU (toyota PU, MINI is not here yet) and yesterday it was 2.54 at the same station, PU is now under 3/gal at the top-tier stations (Shell, etc.)
