I really like this even though in theory I shouldn't. It looks very similar (too similar, really) to the various concepts that preceded the R56.

This is called an Austin mini pick-up.
Mine is also used for hauling .

Now if I could just get AWD under this without raising it any would be great.

Say it isn't so! Don't ya'll think that MINI introducing an SUVish type of vehicle will make the Brand like every other manufacturer?????

And I've been LMAO at these posts.

It's hard to tell scale from the pics, but I'll bet this MINI will still be pretty small when compared w/ most SUVs out there. I like the sliding roof, I like the sculpted doors, and even though I'm not too keen on the headlights, from the front (factoring in that grill) it looks to still have a very Mini-esque face. I am sure it will sell well based on what we've seen w/ the Clubman, although a coupe still is the best fit for me.

I'm glad you asked. This is scaled based on the wheelbase and the rear wheels are lined up. It's only inches longer than a Clubman but it looks like there's a lot more mass up front and of course it is a lot wider.

Check motoringfile..

they have dimensions. It's longer (more than 14'), wider (72") and taller. It's larger for sure... I don't like a lot of the details yet. The Nav Dome thinggy sounds cool, but I don't like the look of it, and it means that when something like that comes out, even more stuff will be bundled into an unhackable mess. Kiss aftermarket stuff goodbye!

I wonder if the funky door scheme will make production. I just wish they'd offered the 4x4 systems showcased on the first gen coupe by Getrag on all versions. 4-door with only two seats in back? Not too good for those that would like to put three kids back there. With the wider footprint the three seat rear could have come over from Europe.

Anyway, there's a lot to hope for and a lot to biatch about....

Matt

PS, maybe they stole the design cues from that Chinese knock off!

hm.. I actually like a lot of the concepts brought to the car in regards to the doors. Also like the return of the glass wrapped C pillars. The doors is what the clubman should have. If you just made it seat 5 and lowered it a bit, I would say it's a pretty nice car.

It looks WAY too much like the Chinese MINI ripoff to me.

The M551 Sheridan is small compared to the M1 Abrams, but a tank is still a tank.

In other famous words, "You can put lipstick on a pig, etc."

This is another case of corporate directors just not getting it.

I'd prefer not to see a bigger MINI, but in MINI's defense it's probably very clear that a model like this would sell and sell well. I'd rather not depart from the existing MINI formula, but I guess if you want to sell cars the pull in this direction is hard to avoid.

Seams like Mini is taking the X3 Frame and slapping a Mini Body on it. I think that It might be successful against other crossovers like the FX series.

If you think of Mini in relative terms, it makes sense. This is small, as far as 5 door SUVs go. This won't be a bad move for MINI. I'm going to pretty much agree with this sentiment: http://www.nathanielsalzman.com/2008...sover-concept/

From the front, even thought higher off the ground the grill work kind of gives it just a bit of a retro classic Mini look that is appealing to me...

...but from the side view -- I just can't get "Hyundai Santa Fe" out of my mind...

Long live the coupe.

This is nothing like the Clubman. The Clubman is a Mini that's been stretched a few inches. This "crossover" is a CR-V with a Mini grille crazy-glued on the front. There is nothing remotely small or "edgy" or "disruptive" about this.

Does anyone here remember the "Let's sip, not guzzle." Mini ad campaign? BMW apparently would hope that we do not.

Dude...no...
Go to Edmunds. I just did. They have all kinds of specs-compare it to those in the article. It's a run-of-the-mill compact SUV.

Put some German engineers in charge of it and you can bet it will be a couple hundred pounds heavier than the competition.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm not really a fan of big MINIs.

Me neither. That's probably because all of these vehicles (I mean CR-V, RAV-4, Escape... I can't even begin to give you a complete list) look exactly the same to me. And you'd better believe the Minicross will be a DIRECT competitor - in price, size, space, weight, and ho-hum fuel economy.

Enough trolling for today, I'm going to bed.

i kinda like it. like someone else said, i like the idea of a panel van or pickup a la the old mini van and pickup better than this, but it's bmw, and they like to play it safe financially. this is much less of a niche car than a panel van or pickup, or even the regular minis. now there'll be fewer people who can say they can't buy a mini 'cuz it's too small. #1 reason bmw bought the mini brand was to make $$$. plus, look at the transformation of the clubman from concept to production. the production version of this might be much more pleasing to look at

FWIW...

it's not a Mini on an X3 frame... The X3 has no frame, but that's beside the point. It's a modified clubman chassis with bits of X1 mixed in....

the more i look at it the more its "face" just seems too angry and aggressive, vs. the coupe and clubman which look cute, quirky and zippy.

of course as people said this might change in production but that pic posted above with the two overlaid shows just how much the coupe/clubman front tapers down compared to this big ol' thing. I think that makes a difference in the cute factor. this is a bit more rottweiler than bulldog.

And being so high up I just don't see how it will be able to have that same "go kart" pedigree as the other models. I do think many of the design cues are very cool and hope those make it into the final verison. I'm sure it will do well for MINI tho.

any word on what sort of powerplant it will have, or the weight?

I like the interior and some exterior design elements, but from the distance I don't like its look.

That "GyroNavCom" device is smokin. I'd pay some coin for that.
