How bad is windshield tint at night?
How bad is windshield tint at night?
I've seen a lot of MINIs on this forum with their front windshields tinted, and have been wondering how this affects your visibility at night? State law allows the top 5 inches of the front windshield tinted, but with a prescription, will allow a full windshield tint, but I'd rather go without any tint if I'm going to be blind at night.
Would it be like wearing sunglasses at night? If it doesn't affect your visiblity, how much tint is on your windshield?
I spoke to my husband, he's saying that if we were able to get a tint on the front windshield, he'd want no more than 95%...to which I replied is rather pointless anyway.
Thoughts?

I would suggest to visit your states website to get the latest tint laws. I live in PA and some laws I have seen state that no windshield tint is NOT allowed. I went to the states website and found the latest laws state that the windshield and all other windows must allow 70% total (including factory tint) of light to pass thru. I'm with you there in saying that it's seems pointless at that amount.
Here's a good site.

Select your state from the dropdown and it will bring up quite a bit of detail on your state.
As far as how it will impact visibility at night... it will be more difficult to see obviously. One thing that may drive you crazy is the "pixelation" that some tints will give to headlights. It will cause the light to look almost refracted. It can be a touch distracting.
I drove a van cross country that had 20% tint all the way around. At first it was harder to drive at night, but you get used to it. There is a feeling when driving that you can't see the little things that might jump out otherwise. Just takes some getting used to.

I personally wouldn't want anything on the front windshield. One more layer to cause glare or reflections when direct headlights are coming on it. But, I've never had it on the front, so I can't speak from experience.
