"Why didn't you just buy a..."
That's an interesting statement.
Other than a Go-Cart, are any other 'production' vehicles "...faster than a Porsche through a slalom?
My 'Sports-Car' experience was limited to the Volvo P1800 and MGB
and know that they would not compare to a MINI (or a Porsche) on such a course.
Recall that 3cyl, 2cyc. FWD Saab's were king on an ice course.

Nope...no one has directly asked me why didn't I just buy a ___. Most people say it is very fitting for me (of course maybe the bias that the mini is a "chick" car factors into that since I'm a petite girl). They also know how I like to drive
I mentioned to a very buff, macho type guy the other day my love of the lotus elise. He said well of course...it's a CHICK car! He said he'd have to question any man that wanted to own one (I only see men driving them around the DC area)...I was speechless. Obviously he's not a true car guy nor a car enthusiast!

I ask myself "why didn't you just buy a classic Mini?" as it's still the most fun Mini around, imo. Then I consider the AC, airbags, and long list of other amenities/safety features and I'm once more very glad to have a MINI.
I bought a mini for my son in 2004 and he always told me each time he gets in it he smiles.......i drove it and never could see what the fuss was.... but now I understand
I am a big girl 5'8 and curvey
I could careless whatpeople say

Sounds like you need to get new friends
No im just kidding sort of i dont even have a mini yet and i really dont care how much they cost, which isnt that much actually, becuase when you think about it you are getting a car that gets close mileage to a prius (if you drive it economically). And its so unique, and it doesnt look like a spaceship, like the prius. So i think i am getting a deal.

Yeah, we had somebody tell us with conviction that for what we spent we could've picked up a base C-Class. They thought this would be a convincing argument?
I could only blink and tell them that they sell more Camrys (Camries?) over on the Toyota lots.
For whatever reason, everybody thinks that the Mini is super-expensive. Everyone is really surprised when we mention that the base price is in the same range as a Prius, a Civic or many of the Mazda 3 models. Sure, fully optioned out the way we got it, it's more expensive- but once they sit in it and go for a ride they're telling other people how nice it is, how fast it feels, talking about the voice control, how much bigger it feels inside that you'd think, etc. Suddenly they wonder why their car didn't come with two sunroofs, and do I seriously get 35MPG?

How you doin'?
Several thoughts:
- Nobody has asked "why didn't you just...", but many have asked "why did you buy a Mini?". A: "Because it's the only car that offered exactly what I wanted."
- In talking to the Mini dealership, they're somewhat disappointed when people come in looking for an "economy car". They tell me they want to say "I'm sorry, we don't have "economy cars", we have sports cars!"...
- I took 2 adult men to lunch yesterday in the MCS. They both had the opportunity to return from lunch (10 minute drive on country roads) in the back seat of my buddy's Saturn 300 (the big one). They both chose to ride back with me. "Plenty of room in here", they said...
- On the ride home yesterday, I was smiled at by a nice looking young lady in a Prius, challenged by a slammed blatty Integra, waved at by two little kids in an SUV, and given a flash-and-wave by a fellow Mini. It was a GREAT day.
Where else can you get that AND also enjoy how well this car drives?

Got the Mustang guys in IT who like to poke fun at the MINI, but it's all in good fun. They know they could only get it on the straights. On top of that, they recognize that the car looks GOOD.
The other night after I was driving the MC and got flagged down by a car full of young college girls wanting me to meet them at the English pub in town since I had a MINI. I was tempted, but Liz would've killed me, and then Siva wouldn't have an owner when he arrived in the states.
Seriously, you can get any other car, but you won't get nearly as much attention as you will in a MINI. And 99% of that attention is the good kind.

Liz wouldn't kill me though. Liz doesn't even know me. Send those girls my way!

I haven't gotten that question - "why did you...?" - but a few people have mentioned that the car suits me well. As in, "I wouldn't have considered you a MINI owner, but now that I see you in it I can see it's really your kind of car."
From a stereotypes perspective, I think the MINI is free & clear. There is too much diversity here to call it a 'chick' car or just an 'autocross car' or just an 'econobox'.
BTW, why let them get under your skin? There is noble tragedy in being misunderstood. No?
