Sex change?

Howdy NAMily,

I'm thinking I need a new name for my MINI. I've always thought of it as a male, therefore the name Basil. My wife has been noticing that I pay a lot more attention to Basil than any other car I've owned - washing by hand, detailing, etc. She refers to the car as my mistress. This makes me think I might need to come up with another name for the car, as I'm not comfortable with having a male mistress (not that there is anything wrong with that....).

Any suggestions with a new name? I've been leaning toward either Polly or Sybil....

This is meant to be humorous, so I hope this doesn't offend. Perhaps, your wife's name? That way you won't get in trouble during you-know-what and you-know-when?!!!

OH BEHAVE!

This is a good time to remind people that newly delivered MINIs should always be rolled over for sex identification. It prevents the problem you've noted...

Yeah, but they all do--depends on where it's located.

(Semi-seriously, though, in the 50's and 60's Porsche offered its 356 in both a "Normal" and a "Super" engine. The Germans considered the "Normal" to be for Damen (ladies). Wonder if that holds true for MC vs. MCS? I've always figured my MCS is a male.

P.S. Our '64 SC is clearly male...)

My wife and I have two boys. Naming them was tough. We always had a girl's name picked out, Emily. I call my new Mini Emily. The daughter I'll never have. Cheese I know, but it works when I say I am going to spend a little time with "Em"

Not dumb. I still have hopes for an English Setter named "Wendy." Of course I wouldn't tell my friend Wendy about it...

I call mine Mini-the-Cooper... kind of a play on Mini the Moocher from the Blues Brothers.
Actually... I don't ever call it that... I just call it Mini, so you can have that one.

daffodildeb: Hey, I was born in Beaumont... drove through Conroe many times. 105 east of you, through the woods would be huge fun in a Mini!

Sorry back to topic

Sophia is definitely a beautiful and fitting name for a MINI! When I was naming mine it came between that and Victoria. Went with Victoria because I have a checkerboard theme going on
Other names I considered naming my baby:
-Jocelyn
-Chloe
-Charlotte
-Sophie (alternate to Sophia)

I vote for Sybil , that way, if later on you want to change it again.. you can still call her Sybil, and talk to her "others"

A car is always a girl. I like Sybil, it sounds kinda like a name your mistress would have.

Thanks for your input everyone! My Mom's cars were always named Betsy, and the last car I named was Bonzo the wonder truck. Sybil and Polly are characters from Fawlty Towers, a British sitcom with John Cleese as Basil, his wife is Sybil and the maid is Polly....

Maybe Betsy is in order as an homage to Mom, but Betsy doesn't have the ring of a mistress' name.... Maybe Trixie or something like that. This is hard, because the car seems more masculine than feminine to me, maybe the whole german thing of the supercharger.

Actually, in German there are three genders (and you have to figure out what EACH noun is!), masculine, feminine, and neuter. Now, I realize MINIs are British, but there IS a German influence. I've always thought of Zippeee! as neuter.

Before you all jump on me, consider that a girl is "das Madchen," which is neuter...

End lesson of the day.
