That really is not right. I can see the usage in construction, stop light enforcement and school zone to improve safety, but this really is a commercial venture.

How about raising taxes in Arizona versus trying a shadow tax at the expense of all car owners.

I bet she is voted out, I know she would get my boot.

agreed on school zones and construction areas. but raise taxes?! property taxes have shot up here, ever since the boom (and now fizzle). I don't think it'll make it through the state legislature.

Did property tax rates shoot up, or property tax assessments?? Big difference...

And yes, I'm in FL.. Pretty familiar with tax increases here

IMHO traffic citations for State and Cities are a "cash Cow' to bring in money. I don't think they give a hoot about safety.

IMO, they want you to speed so they can give tickets. If they make it where people will not speed because of photo enforcement, their revenue goes down. This is theory but seems to make sense to me.

That's nothing new, they've been in Scottsdale for awhile now, if you live in Az you are aware of them, no need for us to pay more taxes.

I live in AZ and I can't say I'm surprised. What with all the camera-monitored intersections and speed vans throughout the Valley (have you noticed even Tempe has jumped on the bandwagon? ), I've gotten used to constantly driving at almost exactly 8 MPH over the speed limit anyway...

And on the other hand, that camera-monitored section of the 101 does feel a lot safer now the Snottsdalians aren't zipping around it at 90 MPH...

In the last paragraph of the article lies the big problem: they can find the owner, but speeding is a driver infraction, not an owner one.
If everyone took to wearing these:
how well do you think the photo thing would work?

From: Washington. No, the other one.
Had that thing going on in a town near me this last summer, but...
it was run by an independent company, and the town discovered they got too little of the money from the tickets and the cost for all of the court challenges made running it a loosing proposistion. It was dropped. Yay!

Yeah, Peoria is also jumping on that band wagon, they were setting up portable camera's on the 101, they're gone now, but i'm sure they will be back, they've also added a few red light camera's as well.

Prescott Valley was really wanting to put their vans on AZ69. Red-light cameras were first. This is important for everyone: the red-light cameras are "revenue neutral", meaning they didn't want everyone to think it was just for the money. Of course, how long will that last? I'm sure the so-called AZ Clean Elections Commission is fine with it too, they get a few bucks out of every ticket for funding candidates.

Considering how many idiots are driving fast nowadays, I'm almost for the damn cameras. Hate the concept of punishing everyone to get a few.

Yep. Got hit by one of those cameras. 55 in a 45 mile zone costs $190.00!
Be careful out there!

Actually, to be fair, I think they're calibrated to allow 11 MPH over the limit. So it was probably more like 57 MPH.

I'm surprised so many of you from Arizona seem to be fine with this, I guess I'm just a chronic speeder, but I think the whole thing sucks. Look at what happened in England, now they have cameras everywhere, just seems too much like big brother to me. I hope that never happens out here in Pennsylvania.

Of course we don't like it! As a recovering speedaholic, I get pissed at all the flagrant speeders and red-light runners around here.

But don't worry, we are the leading edge of the keep-up-with-the-Jones attitiude in government. If it gets out of hand, I'm sure something will change.

She is in her last term as governor--term limits. That is why she is backing Obama as she is hoping to get a cabinet post. Then she can make it nationwide radar

I heard an article about this on the TV this morning. Stats show a reduction in the number of speeders in camera'd areas by 70%. The streets are a shared public space. I consider active measures to slow people who can't follow the rules and respect my personal safety to be a public service.

I'll admit, I've been hit with speeding tickets. I got one back in college and I deserved it... I was driving when I was too tired and shouldn't have been out there. One time, a couple years ago, was a blatent speed trap / revenue generator. Another recent example (a few years ago) I just wasn't paying attention to my speed and got caught speeding legitimately on the highway. With each of the 2 real instances, I learned a lesson and modified my behavior... exactly what the process was meant to do. Others on the road are safer because of it... I didn't like paying the fine or taking the on-line classes, but I honestly can't complain about those 2 instances.

There is a news story (video) on Yahoo news right now talking about these cameras. The story shows a citation in Maryland issued to a pepperwhite MINI. heehee Only a MINI would star in a commercial about these cameras!

im suprised no one from VA hasnt chimed in on this one....i used to be stationed in va...VBPD (Virginia Beach Police Department) was the worst of all...they would issue tickets for nonsense...80 bucks here....80 bucks there...it all adds up...and what did all that added revenue gain...the roads there are still F'd up...

oh and check this out....on the oceanfront in virginia beach...you cannot cruise...if you pass the same point more than twice in a 3hr period i think its a 100+ dollar fine....oh and you cant cuss and you have to wear appropriate attire(appropriate attire according to a group of stodgy old sticks in the mud)

some of the cities in the hampton roads area tried to do the red light ticket cams but that got shot down...because its intended use was traffic monitoring but they tried after it was installed to use them as red light ticket cams

One nice thing about living in Philly is that the cops have more important **** to worry about than speeding. There is a police station on Lincoln drive, the speed limit is 25mph, the average speed on that road is around 50mph. It's kind of funny to see a whole stream of cars flying by at twice the speed limit as the cops patiently wait to pull out of the parking lot.
