backup indicator in the snow

Okay... in New England, as many of you know, there was a snowstorm today. After clearing the snow, I hear the signal which tells me when I am backing too close to an object (which is a steady tone, indicating that I am about to HIT something) whenever I put the car into reverse. My question is, where on the car is the sensor and would snow have anything to do with its malfunction?

See the circles on the rear bumper? Those are the sensors. If covered by snow, you'll get false readings.

<edit> I just noticed that you have an R56, so it may not be the same.
