The BEST road to drive.

I can't believe that this topic isn't already stickied... Ok so here's the parameters if you wish to play along...
1. Identify the road and state, etc.
2. Please link to it so we can actually find it.
3. Share if you have driven it and if you enjoyed it.

Here's my contribution.
North Montana just south of the Canadian border. The whole world goes to Logan's Pass and the Going to the Sun Road, but there is a much better place just a few kilometers away. It's a really twisty road and all the traffic uses the other route. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...&t=h&z=10&om=1
I loved this road even when I drove it in my 1997 Hyundai Accent. I just got the Mini and I can't wait for summer to come so I can take this drive.

When I lived on the west coast, we had to go to the legendary Tofino, BC, Canada. On the way I found this gem of a road. Tofino is a very small town and this road is dead. Unfortunately I drove it in a 1985 Pontiac 6000. Super lame, I know. The road is very twisty and empty. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...&t=h&z=10&om=1
My MINI MA drove the road in his MINI. He said it was awesome. I want to go back...

I love Ortega Highway

Take it from San Juan Capistrano over to Lake Elsinore and the road gets gradually more and more demanding before finally straightening out and leveling off.

It is a dangerous road and many of the bends are relatively 'blind' and off camber and challenging, but as long as you respect the road, it is very rewarding.

When I lived out in L.A., I always favored Yerba Buena Rd., right on the LA/Ventura country border, going from PCH to Mulholland Hwy. As you're heading north on PCH, it's your first right, immediately after Neptune's Net.

I live in the upstate of SC, and we have too many roads to mention in the foothills and mountains of the western Carolinas. We have anything from country road cruising to mountain twisties.

US Hwy 129, TN and NC, “The Tail of the Dragon” with 318 turns in 11 miles and no intersecting roads. I go to drive the road at least 3 times a year.

If you don't know of this road, stick around here for a couple more months and it's all you will read or hear about because the International MINI meet will be held there the first full weekend in May.

Little Tujunga in So Cal is one of my favorites. Hard to pick, California has so many great roads. Pashnit's motoroads website (www.pashnit.com) does a nice job of listing some of the great ones.

The most fun I've had in my MINI was on Highway 1; as you exit San Francisco on the Golden Gate, you meet with a very twisty Highway 1 that eventually leads to driving with a beautiful oceanic view. Another fun one is going to South Tahoe via Highway 50 (Sacramento to Tahoe). As you get into the mountains, the roads start to get twisty, and the scenary is again just amazing.

Jamaica Way AKA VFW Parkway, Boston, MA. Super narrow back road that cuts through several town. Twisty road with ups and downs next to a huge pond with nice scenery. At night, you can push it to the max at the crazy curves, rotaries, and S-Curves, during traffic time, you'd get the biggest adrenaline rush going down the middle lane with stopped traffic on your right and on coming traffic on your left.

I drive this road every weekend. It is fun when there is no traffic but it is a city road and there is too much traffic. People can't stay in their damn lanes. Oncoming traffic also cuts over the center line. I saw the results of a head-on collision of an audi a4 against a truck a couple months ago. The results were in the back of a mortuary van.

I would have to say The Angeles Crest Highway north of LA is one of the best.

I like the road to Mt Hamilton from San Jose. Not really very fast. 2nd -3rd gear type of turns. You're daring if you even get past 40mph as the turns are tight, blind, and one after another. You can get car sick just going one way too fast as it takes some concentration. I know some like the wider, twistier and faster roads..For me, the MINI is more in its element in this type of slower, tighter roads...

Once you are there Tuna Canyon is a fun one-way downhill drive to the PCH.

My favorites are the 236, Summit Rd., and Skyline Blvd/35. Get any of them off the 17. Also, just a little north on Skyline/35 you can go on La Honda or 84 to the 1, both good roads.

Laguna Seca to Arroyo Seco (Soledad)

Another favorite, I am always the only one on this road. Once I was trailing this vintage Porsche with an older distinguished gentleman driving, It felt like I was in some European countryroad. This one starts at Laguna Seca Raceway from the get go Laurels Canyon Grade sets the tone make your left on the Carmel Valley Rd. see some quaint shops your last Chevron for a while too. (so gas up) then the fun begins a few miles into it. Careful with the cattlecrossings. You end up in Arroyo Seco campground you can picnic there or camp, dive, swim, in the nude if you want. From there you are close to the 101 and the town of Soledad (near the prison)

OK could resist, one more

Here it is from Buttonwillow Raceway to Creston via the 58 and 229 then back down 229 (yes, one more time, trust me) then continue west on the 58 to 101. (Atascadero)

Haven't threaded it with the Mini (yet), but I traversed it several times on the motorcycle over the summer in rather spirited fashion. Very twisty with one magnificent hairpin ... I left a lot of my footpegs around those corners!

CA Hwy-168 from Big Pine to the Nevada state line. Out in the desert, no one around. Up, down, all around.

Calaveras Road along side I-680 in the east Bay Area. Watch your a**.

Hwy-1 from Mill Valley north.

Hwy-1 from Malibu to Monterey.

+1 on CA Highway 229 - absolutely amazing road!!

My all time fave though has to be CA Highway 36 way up in NorCal. 130+ miles from Fortuna east to Red Bluff. About 30 miles west of Red Bluff are the most incredible roller coaster twisties.

The motorcycle site Pashnit.com describes Highway 36 very well - http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/Highway36.htm

RE:Hwy-1 from Malibu to Monterey.
I would just start the 1 near Morro Bay thats where the fun begins, maybe take the 5 to 58 to 229 back to 58 to 101 to Morro Bay then the 1. On the other hand I you have not driven the 1 in its entirety you must before you die. take pics. I went from Oregon to OC. I gotta do it again on the GP. It would be nice if the MINI clubs organized a long 3 day run of the 1. Or maybe a Sat/Sun weekend and just start from Morro Bay (middle of CA) to Crecent City. (near oregon border) And maybe for those brave souls continue north with PDXMINIS. Hmmm, I got some vacation???
