I never heard of such a thing ! We can legally exclude specific drivers due to bad driving records. We have general exclusions on our policies for things like.... "we will not provide coverage if your car is used as a taxi"... things like that. But, as you stated earlier, to exclude other drivers due to their age, even though they are licensed ? Odd.

I see, that makes sense now that you put it that way, thanks for clarifying.

You're welcome. I know it must be confusing because I have insured's who do the same thing, quite regularly.

Yep, I have had policies that stated "No unmarried drivers under 25".

Intriquing... who is your Insurance Carrier ?

And in which state are your auto policies written ?

Jack's, unless Betty lives in the same household, and because of her horrid driving record, is excluded from Jack's policy.

Me thinks that someone doesn't understand the meaning of the word "exclusion".

Your policy can be rated for no drivers under 25 years old and your application and maybe even some documentation from the company could say that like nifty cover letters etc.

But when it comes down to it if there is an accident and as long as you don't get into a material misrep issue (another thing entirely!) then coverage will apply because you have no "exclusion" in the policy stating that is does not. The policy is what we claims adjusters rely on to investigate coverage and provide coverage.

See your policy section titled...Physical Damage section / Exclusions
This section tells you what Exclusion would apply in the case of physical damage to your auto (keep in mind your Liability Section also has different exclusions) I have yet to see a policy which has that exclusion.

Now I have some wierd ones being in the collector car biz, like rust, restoration damage etc. But none with the underage driver.

And just to muddy things further, we do rate our policies that no drivers under 25 are elegible to purchase a policy or drive the insured vehicles. But if an accident occurs we cannot just deny the claim based on that, our policy does not back us up. Now we could look into a "material misrep" like I stated above but you would have to prove that the insured left out the information on purpose so they could get coverage or cheaper rates. Then you can resend the policy and thus no coverage for claim. Trust me when I say too $$$ to fight and hard to prove in the types of claims I handle.

Blech insurance! I have had enough insurance for the day and am headed home!

Yeah, there's a difference between Excluded Drivers and coverage Exclusions.
Excluded Drivers are named and specifically excluded.

Coverage Exclusions are broad and general, such as the statement MikeL is saying is on his policy... "no drivers under age 25". Like H82, I've never seen an exclusion for coverage like that one.

Anyway, also like H82, I've had enough of car insurance today and attorney's who are looking for $20,000 for soft tissue injuries. I'm heading home, too.
