Ugh I got hit
Get the estimate immeadiatly and get it to his father for payment. You have a much stronger position RIGHT NOW! If the Dad balks, contact your insurance agent and let them handle it. You probably pay for uninsured motorists (I do) ..... and that is what the 14 year old is.
Bluegarvis,
In GG's case, the driver is un under-aged, non-licensed driver. It depends upon state insurance regulations and the insurance carrier's procedures within those regulations. Without knowing all the informations (again, it takes days and sometimes weeks to investigate a claim in order to make a decision), it's hard to say if coverage from the insured vehicle would extend in this accident. However, if the kid took the car without the insured's permission, dad's insurance company can deny for non-permissive use (don't laugh, you'd be amazed at what people do).
If they do deny, yes GG's policy would pay out under a combination of coverages, including UM. And then they would attempt to collect from this under-aged kids parents for the damages.
What I can say is that the determination of fault in GG's accident has nothing to do with the age or license status of the driver. That's a separate decision from the one on the extension of coverage.
As far as your daughter's situation goes, based on the small bit of info available, I would surmise that the insurance company found her to be legally liable because she was merging lanes and not fully established in lane 4 at the time of the collision. The presence of white paint is circumstantial without any hard evidence... witness testimony that the white car was involved, a tag number that can be traced to the hit-and-run vehicle that fits the description given by someone from the scene, etc.

I hear ya, Gromit. We have USAA...and I feel very blessed any time we have to deal with them - or I hear horror stories about other companies.
Mostly...I'm glad that CRPWJB is around to help us make sense of all these accident-related posts and keep things in perspective.

I went with like, big three as a consumer that I'm aware of...you aren't Allstate, you aren't Geico...process of elimination.
You're just too smart for your own good, Mel !
Tiggy,
Thanks very much for the compliment.
I worry that sometimes I come across as a know-it-all on these accident threads. Just trying to make sure people don't make poor choices on insurance matters that can hurt them financially, short-term or long-term.
And I do enjoy helping, when I can. I hope everyone realizes I can't always help because of the complexity involving particular accidents and the state insurance laws that differ from state-to-state.
Again, I appreciate the sentiment.
I have had GEICO for over 10 years & they have always treated me fairly. I had an accident which totalled an old car I had & the adjuster was at my car that day, totalled it, & had a check overnighted to me very quickly.
I had Allstate & they are the worst bunch of so&so's I have ever dealt with. The body shop I wanted to work with (because I had used them before & their work was excellent) refused to work on my car if Allstate was paying the bill because Allstate would do battle with him back & forth for 2 weeks over minute things (like $20 worth of screws) & he said it was too much of a hassle to deal with them.
