I guess mabye you can argue that you are not on a highway yet.
You know, that's interesting. The on-ramp was COMPLETELY backed-up which is dangerous! The only thing that may hurt me is the 5 taps. I don't feel like I was being impatient. If I was impatient I would have 1) Driven around the people 2) LAID on the horn 3) curse and flail or 4) all of the above.

Of course this officer was way wrong and clearly not adding to the quality of life or increasing safety by any measure in issuing this summons. But my experience in court suggests that this will be a he said, he said and the man with the badge and gun usually wins those.

Perhaps you can plead it down beforehand to something cheaper as I assume this is no points.

My bet is it will cost you $190 and the officer will get overtime pay. The thought of it does not bring a smile to my face. And a lawyer will cost the same as the ticket so that is no option here either.

Rich
Unfortunately, I think you're right. What are the chances of the officer NOT showing up for court???

I guess NYC doesn't have such a law?

It's obvious (based on your info) that cop was having a bad day.

I fought a $10 parking ticket and won. I only did because the meter maid had a pissy attitude. Also, she wasn't giving tickets when in court.

Reminds me of the time I was driving along with a sherriff behind me. A raven eating lunch on road kill had trouble getting away and bounced of my windsheild. I saw it tumble over, and right into the sheriffs windsheild! So he pulled me over and gave a ticket!

Come on JustJAY, all pigs are no morons !
I just wonder, when that cop is standing there having a bad day, how many houses are getting broken in? how many thieves are working away to never be found? how many woman are getting raped? how many children are being abused? how many stores are being robed? how many cars are being stolen? how many laws are being broken that are just a tad more important than honking?
you know what makes honking a priority?
Unlike all of the above, it is REVENU. Money money money!!!
Man I hate scamers

so that's my mini story for the officer not showing up.

If I were you, I will probably say I saw in the rear view mirror that some of the cars behind me were coming in really fast and they may not see the backed up. I tap the horn a few times to warn them off but didn't realize the officer was standing next to me.

The two times in my life I really needed them they were no were to be found. But everytime I go 10 MPH over the speed limit they always seem to be there. I'm sorry if I hate paying for something and then try to collect on it and they tell me i'm just not important enough to help.

I don't blame them for not wanting to do real work, Heck I don't want to. as much as I hate it, I gotta agree with this dude. Here in New Orleans, the cops don't do **** but harrass people. I think the murder conviction rate is 12%!!!! The other day my sister's boyfriend got his *** kicked by 4 cops just for asking a meter maid why he was getting a ticket. he was charged with assaulting an officer (He was the one that got beat up, mind you) and sentenced to 20 days. The cops impounded his car and then stole everything that wasn't nailed down (digital camera, skateboard, my sister's purse even all the change in the ashtray). This is the same city that a bunch of cops got videotaped beating up an old man, and just had all the charges dismissed the other day. That kind of stuff happens all the time (i've seen cops here beat people up for the crime of simply asking them directions or crossing the street at the wrong time). But when they can actually be of help, they do nothing. The other day, some guy parked his car on top of my girlfriend's bumper, damaging her car. there just happened to be a bunch of cops nearby, so she called them over. "uhh, sorry there's nothing we can do...i guess you can wait for the guy and talk to him, but you're on your own with this one"...this is the same police force that looted over 200 cadillacs from a local dealership during the hurricane. they occupy themselves with petty offenses, or make up offenses so they can flex their muscle and so they can spend the night sitting on their *** doing paperwork instead of stopping the rampant crime in this city...sorry, this thread just got under my skin and I had to vent a little bit...i know not all cops are bad, its just hard to see that in a city where they have absolutely no respect for the citizens...

NO has always been corrupt and probably always will, this is nothing new.

When I lived there, it was just as bad so that is really not an example of real police unit.

Sure, police officers are human and they do have bad days. I agree with the above posts that the ticket was really not needed. However, calling someone a "pig" that does and will put his/her life on the line daily to protect you is just wrong. I think that they deserve a bit more respect than that.

That also assumes that the cop is subpoenaed, and shows up. YMMV on this, but from what I understand, up here in WA in various cities, the cops either always show up, or never show up. Bellevue, for example, they make a point of being there for every subpoena.

So, if it's word against word, if there is no one to issue the counter point, you have to go with what is presented.

And to this, I say good for you. You are completely entitled to your opinion, and I respect you for sticking to it and defending it. Your experience is not the same as everyone else here.

Sounds like a clear case of assult to me. If he hadn't been there, the cops wouldn't have bruised their knuckles. Obviously, his was an unwise choice.

OK, it was a stretch. I shouldn't poke fun at this situation.

If the ticket gets thrown out that's one thing but if you go to court & the judge reduces the fine it will save you very little moolah as the majority of the ticket is court costs. I was ticketed for speeding but when I heard the fine was doubled because I was in a construction zone I was going to fight because there had not been a worker present in the zone for over 3 months. It turned out the speeding fine was $20 & the construction zone fine was $20 & the court costs were $175 so basically I would have sat in court all day to save $20 (which I didn't do)

The ticket for beeping his horn is bad but Kurt, I think yours takes the cake! I bet if you had swerved he would have gotten you for illegal lane change

*permission to speak sir* begging your pardon sir, but the person they are describing is indeed a pig... 'sworn officers' and 'pigs' are 2 COMPLETELY different things... pigs throw their weight around needlessly and abuse innocent people... sworn officers protect and serve as they are supposed to... honestly and without prejudice... it is in fact a sad world when we have to notate the difference....

forums are a place where people can place their opinions, beliefs and thoughts... if it is to be said it is in a place like this and not to their face as most people who call police officers pigs to their face deserve the treatment they get...

In court? Won't matter.

The way Nevada law seems to be written... you f#$ked, either way.

If you don't subpoena him, he doesn't have to show (though if the department allows, he can... at OT rates, usually. Cha-ching!!!). He can turn in an affidavit and it'll work just as well. With an infraction the court only has to prove the "preponderance of evidence", meaning, more likley than not you committed the offense: honking your horn. If you say you were honking your horn, well, that's that.

I would actually look into a deferral (if Nevada allows it). Basiclly the court hold the infraction for 12-24 months. If you don't get any other tickets during that period of time, it disappears. If you do, though... it pops back onto your driving record and stays. In Washington your allowed one deferral every 36 months (or somthing close to that - I don't work in the court).

As far as the incident itself... too bad you were the focus of this guy's wrath that day. If he was uber-polite and you still got a ticket, would it be internet-worthy? Probably not.

Good luck.

Well personally, I think you just need to seriously need to find a way for it to look like you were innocently charged, like someone else said, you were honking in order to avoid a collision or something like that. Look at the law and make it work in your favor. If all else fails, just say you were beeping at a buddy in another MINI - it's the universal "hello"!
