Italian Job (1969) versus Italian Job (2003)
I've got them both, and I like them both for different reasons. The original is definitely at a slower pace though. The original Bond movies from the 60s can look a little cheesy at times too, but still likeable.
My favorite bit: "We have to work as a team. That means you do everything that I say."

The actors can drive, they went through a 2 week long stunt driving school.
I like the new one. But then I have a new 'MINI'. Go to the classic Mini boards and I'm sure they'll all know the first movie.
I liked the new one, and it really felt like the old Mission Impossible tv series to me, especially the end. The bit where Norton shows up and they've already set things up with the Ukranians. Little surprise plot element they hide from us and pop out that they've already got covered. Very MI: like...
I WANT to like the one from '69, but I've tried to watch it twice and it put me to sleep. I'll try again after a nap!

Yeah, they can definitely drive. Jason Statham (Handsome Rob) was the one who did all the BMW films along with the Transporter movies.
[Lorna picks Charlie up from prison]
Charlie Croker: This car belongs to the Pakistani ambassador!
Lorna: It does?
Charlie Croker: Typical, isn't it? I've been out of jail five minutes, and already I'm in a hot car.
Lorna: Charlie, I just wanted you to come out in style, baby.

Mr. Bridger (Noel Coward) the old guy who is treated like royalty in prison was approached by ex-con Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) to back and finance a scheme to steal gold in Italy. I guess they celebrated toward the end of the movie as he was able to orchestrate the plan while he is incarcerated and was able to pull-it off under the Mafia's noses.
I just like the fact that they use the same names in the 2003 version.
Charlie Croker - Mark Wahlberg
Mr. Bridger - Donald Sutherland

I own both on DVD I really enjoy them both. I like to think of the new one as a kind of sequel. So we know where the gold went and they had to go and get it back.
As for the "cliff hanger" in the extras section of the dvd they do state that they left it that way in case they made enough money to do a sequel. It's kind of fun to come up with your own idea for the ending though.
Also on the original extras there is an awsome deleted scene of the MINIs and some Fiats driving on ice with a small orchestra playing at the other end. The driving in the first one is probably better than the second.
I think the character development on the second was better, you didn't care about all the characters in the first.
I can watch either of them at anytime.

A reason for that is because of Britain's weird censorship laws at the time. Charlie and his guys were seen as bad guys so the law said that the movie couldn't end showing him getting away with the money. That's why it ended with the bus scene instead. It was a lousy way to end the movie. Remember that the church had a little bit of influence on what movies could be release and they nearly succeeded in preventing the Monty Python movies from being released.
I like the original better just because it seems to have more of that mini
'culture' in it. What may translate as 'boring' for some people may be that
they just don't understand British humor, as many Americans don't. It's
just different. I'm not a big fan of today's films for the most part.
Too caught up in the graphics and big name actors that they lose
the storyline. They are movies for two completely different generations.
But I think what it comes down to is that the original is just too slow
for those born in the MTV era. (though I'm one of them and I still
prefer the original!)

I saw the original on TV years ago and it took years to get to see it again It was great years ago and I still love it. The best part of the new movie is Cincinnati MINI paid for all their customers to see it the night before it was really released. It was the first gathering of the new MINI I ever saw.
+1 to that last part!!
I love the original and saw it years ago because I like heist films. The new one I got as a freebie for buying an HD player and while it was enjoyable, other than the Minis and a few action scenes it's forgettable. A pity, really. I hope the sequel is better. Maybe the director and writers learned something. I just happened to buy a Mini years later.
I think I would have to give the nod to the original as well, but I enjoy them both immensely.
And I agree with the Charlize Treron mention,
and I also like that she is driving an original Mini in it as well, so, sort of the best of both worlds there too.

I just got the original from Amazon for $8.
It's been a while since I've seen the "remake" - I think they have it at the library, I'll have to order it. To tell the truth I don't remember much about it except for the Mini getaway so ... guess the rest wasn't that memorable. The original was great - very funny, loved Michael Caine - worth seeing for sure.

Can someone enlighten me?
