GS autox wheel sizes allowed?
I know some of these rules get kind of confusing so hoping someone who has already researched it can offer some insight. With the MCS and the sport package, the 17" are standard. Does one have to run the same size wheel in SCCA stock class or can you drop down to a 16" wheel and save some weight? What seems to be the developing norm for autoxing. I haven't gotten a MCS yet but plan to buy in the next month or so and wanted to get a good idea first before I proceeded. Thx

The SCCA rules can be confusing. For stock classes you can use any wheel size that was available from the factory (not a dealer add-on) for your model. So yes, you can use a 16 in. wheel on a MCS, but it has to be the 16 x 6.5 size used by MINI not the more common 16 x 7.
I don't think you can order a MCS with the 15 in. wheel that is available on the Cooper, so that one couldn't be used in GS.
If you don't use a factory wheel, the offset must be within one-quarter inch of the factory wheel offset. There is a big thread on light 16 in. wheels in the http://www.mini2.com racing forum.
You will love autoX with your MINI.

Yes, 15s could not be ordered but is that true you could not use them in stock class? I don't have the rules and just want to make sure. I know if the offsets are set in stone I imaging the wheel size is, but since the MC had 15s I would think the judges that wrote the rules may let that work for the MCS too.. Sort of like the foam element airfilter works for stock type thing so to speak....
The wheel thing is not like the replacement air filter element... Wheels are not considered routine maintenance wear items. So you have to use wheels the same diameter and width as were available on the model you chose to race. So MCS has to use 16x6.5 or 17x7. MC use 15x5.5 or 16x6.5

So I'm looking to buy a set of dedicated auto-x wheels and am leaning toward a slightly heavier but wider 17x7 as opposed to the 16x6.5. I'm thinking the Mini has enough torque/power to overcome the slightly heavier wheel and would benefit more from having a wider strip of rubber on the road.
Could be a problem getting tires in the right sizes though....
205/45/16 - Hoosier A6
215/40/16 - Kumho V710 Rounded Shoulder
225/40/17 - Hoosier A6
225/45/17 - Hoosier A6 Load Range LL (whatever that means)
215/40/17 - Kumho V710 Squared Shoulder
225/45/17 - Kumho V710 Squared Shoulder
What's the difference between the rounded and squared shoulder? I have heard bad things about the squared shoulders wearing out quickly.
I'd rather not go any higher than a 205 on a 6.5" wheel or a 215 on a 7" wheel though which has me leaning back toward the 16x6.5s based on tire availability.
Thoughts?
