Drag Racing Redlight?

Anyone know what R/T equals a Redlight? One person told told me it was under .500 . But, another told me that because of the "new light bulbs" that the Redlight R/T was much lower now.

Anyone know?

Mike

I do know that in a standard 'full tree' start where the the amber lights sequence down one by one to the green the interval there is .5 seconds and your r/t is based on that interval. In a 'pro' tree where all the ambers light at once then go to green the interval is .4 seconds, with the r/t matching. To cut a perfect pro tree your r/t would have to be .400.

Many tracks are switching from old style incandescent bulbs in the 'tree to LED lamps. These lights dont have the turn on/turn off delay that incandescent lamps do. The intervals are still .5 for standard and .4 for pro and this is what your reaction time/redlight will be based on. The new lights do tend to make racers redlight more until they get used to them.

Actually many tracks that hold NHRA and IHRA events are going back to the old 0 (zero) tree.

-.004 is a redlight

Makes a lot more sense

R/T stands for Reaction Time, the time it takes your foot to travel from the brake to the gas pedal.

As another said it really depends on the tree and event.. For Handicap eliminations most standard uses a .5 light. Which is the time from when the last yellow comes on to when the Green light is on. on Pro tree's where there isnt a count down of yellows some are at the .4 and some at .0 you need to ask at the track your at for the tree time.

at some tracks, it seems like it depends on wether or not the computer likes you.

at Thompson Dragway in Ohio, ive cut a .499 on a .500 tree and its let is slip by without a redlight.

on another night, i cut a .500 flat and it gave me a redlight.

BTW, this was with my old corvette, not my mini hehe

Rreaction time is the time from when the light turns green until the start beam is broken. On the start line there are 3 beams prestage, stage and start. Normally you can get your best time if you watch the last yellow light and go when it starts to dim. This takes account for your readtions to release the brake, hit the gas and tires to spin a bit to get the car to start moving to brake the light. This was my 'formula to a good reaction time'.
