AutoX Racing shorten life of the car?
My 1987 BMW 325iS has over 215,000 miles on the ODO. For at least the past 10 years it has done many autocross events and track days in addition to the usual street driving.
The drive train has never needed any attention other than routine service. Because of the way it's used, it is perfectly maintained and cared for. If anything, I feel that autocrossing has overall benefits for a car. The cars that I see at autox events are well cared for. We all know that our cars will be scrutinized by zealous car people at every event, so it’s a matter of pride to show up with a clean well maintained car. I have also autocrossed other cars I’ve owned, and none have ever had mechanical or premature wear problems.
Some drivers are hard on cars. It little matters if they are driving around town or on an autox course. Other drivers have a feel for cars and don’t subject them to rough treatment, even when driving at the limit.
Autocrossing is a recreation for me. It may have some small cost in car wear, but my experience suggests that the cost is small. The positive value is high for me. Good people, friendly competition, a shared interest, and camaraderie. I can afford it.
Happy trails, even if they are on an autocross course,
Joe Stephenson
