Transition/Race Tire? Pirelli PZero Corsa.
Transition/Race Tire? Pirelli PZero Corsa.
I know this is not the wheel/tire forum, but I thought this post was more appropriate in the racing forum.
Am in need of new tires (again
), and was tempted to go to an R compound. Would be breaking my promise to myself not to do it till I have two seasons of trackdays in. Was talking with Alex at TireRack and he suggested a compromise of sorts, the Pirelli PZero Corsa.
I remember that this tire was specifically outlawed at One Lap because the tire wear rating was too low -- 60, to meet the requirement of street tires only. Alex said, true for all but one size -- our/my size of 215/45/17. That rating is 140 with an 8/32nd depth. I'm not doing any series were this comes into play, but I believe this is the minimum tread rating for Solo2. I'm sure someone will know.
Alex warned me that it acts more like an R compound and will not be singing to me in the manner I have become accustomed with street tires. Expensive at $195, but then I guess Hoosiers aren't cheap either.
Alex pointed out that one Mini driver in Baton Rouge has used them on the track with great results. Here is his quote from TireRack:
"I use these tires for road racing and have been impressed with their performance. My lap times improved by over 2 seconds which gave me a 4th, two 2nds and a first place in class during last four races. They seem to outlast any racing slick such as Hoosiers...Ihave race 6 races on these tires and could still race two more. I will continue to use these as my race tires." Sincerely, Paulo S. Diniz

So, I may be another tester. Love to hear if anyone else has run them and what their experience has been. Any advice on pressures would be helpful.

I got the Corsa's to be a compromise R-compound tire. Found out that they are not as good as Hoosier/Kumho Victoracers-Ecsta, etc. But I decided to keep them on the rims and have been running them for 6 months as street tires, with a couple of track days thrown in. They have been very good high performance tires, I've been reluctant to remove them and put the Conti Extreme Contracts all seasons on in their place. I have dedicated track tires on another set of rims.
So far, with about 5,000 miles they seem to be wearing pretty well. Some wear on the edges, but still a lot of tread left.
It sounds like you should be looking at the Corsa's, Kumho MX's (which I also had and did not like as well as the Corsa's) or the Falken Azenis'.
Don't you have Leda's, like I do?

Mark, yes on the Ledas. Very happy with them. Gives me something to screw around with between sessions.
Actually, very helpful when the weather changes, which happens a lot around here.
On tires, I live in the Seattle area and have always gone with tires capable of handling wet conditions: Falken 451's, Potenza S-03's and Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Liked the Potenzas, BTW. Falken 451's a "Best Buy".
Anyway, during our few weeks of Summer, I thought I'd try a "dry" tire for a change. Have two sets of wheels, so will use Corsas only on the track. Alex seem to prefer them to the MX's, TA kD's etc. Still prefer to hold off on true R compound till next year.
