NorthAmericanMotoring.com needs your help!
NorthAmericanMotoring.com has been selected to send a representative to the 1st Annual Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge - a road race on one of the country's most challenging mountain roads - Nevada's Highway 341. Click here for more on the 1st Annual Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge.
Here is how we need the help of the members. We need a member of the forum who is willing to take their car to this racing event (which is by invitation only) and we want the members of the forum to nominate the car/member who they want to see representing NorthAmericanMotoring.com!
Keep in mind, this isn't to be a popularity contest. Don't nominate someone because you are buddies with them on the forum. The member nominated needs to be willing to take his or her car to Nevada in June for this two day race.
The members do not need to check with the people they are nominating... we will take care of that. All we need is your nominee's name and a picture of their car IN THIS THREAD. The cars don't need to be fully built race cars (all vehicles entered must be registered, have insurance, and be street legal) and the member doesn't need to be a professional racer but please keep in mind that we want to make a good showing so some racing experience would be nice and let's be honest; a stock car isn't going to get the job done.
Recap: Members of NorthAmericanMotoring.com are asked to nominate a forum member and his or her car to represent the forum in the 1st Annual Speed by Spectre 341 Challenge. To nominate someone, you need to post their forum screen name and a picture of their car. There is no limit to the number of nominations but we will only be accepting them for 10 days, so if you want to nominate someone, speak up! Again, you (the member nominating someone) does not need to check to make sure that the nominated member has a chance of coming. This race is a little over two months away, so we probably dont want members who have cars that are torn down and might not be ready...but lets get those nominations in and after ten days, we will begin contacting the nominees.
Ultimately, with the help of the forum staff, we will cut the number of nominees down and have the members vote on the car that will represent the forum at the race event.

Don't have actual picture of his car but here is a link to one

I have seen this guy drive and he is good. Drives Hellbender 28 in NC between Fontana Village and Deal Gap (the Dragon start point) and back in about 15 minutes. Total distance about 18 miles. For that road with the twisties it has that is a good time.

Just some background information to help everyone out and videos on where this event is being held as I have raced this. I used to live up at Lake Tahoe and was fortunate to be able to practice on this tarmac as it was only about 45 min from my house. This area is hot, dry and starts at a high elevation ~ 5,200 ft ends at around 6,800 ft.
I ran the original Virginia City Hillclimb with the Audi quattro club and Ferrari Owners Club back in 1994. I drove my '85 Audi 4000S quattro, not a MINI Cooper S but still fun. My trap speed about 3/4 of the way up the hillclimb was around 76 mph IIRC, FTOD was Steve Beddor in his Ruf CTR 132mph .
Most of the turns I could hold flat out in my lowly 115hp quattro. I'm sure a properly modded R53 and or R56 and with proper oil cooling will work well. It gets HOT up there even first thing in the morning.
Just so everyone can get an idea of exactly what this is like, here is my 1994 VCH in-quattro run, best time I could squeeze out of her was a 4:32.
Steve Beddor's Ruf CTR FTOD start
Highly modified Porsche 914/6 start
and lastly, for pure entertainment...
FYI, this site does work ...

Totally Street Legal in all fifty states. But probably as close to not as possible. I will get another picture of it with its license plate while at MOTD 2010.

I want to chime in here again. I'm still undecided on who on NAM to nominate, best to have a full cage roll bar. This is NOT a light hearted venue and should be approached as a full track event. My choices would be someone who has track experience as this is a very FAST hillclimb. Up top it flattens out and most speed is gained there.
If Randy Smalley could get his ex-MINI Challenge Club Sport R56 approved for the street, he is my first choice.
Otherwise maybe these NAM drivers have access to a street prepped MINI Cooper S or theirs is ready to go?
Jason Aranha
Steve Diniz
"Siddharta" Jerry Bradburry
Ian Stewart
Back in 1994 a fellow with another Audi 4000S quattro missed the apex up top on turn 17 and plowed into it the hillside. He bounced off this and shot strait off the cliff and was lucky with only several blown tires, not rolling and a way messed up suspension. The next year, I went up in my '83 Audi ur-quattro to cover the event and crew for my co-driver the year before Randy Evans. We used a modded Audi 5000CS turbo quattro that was much faster. An Ultima GTR launched (yes LAUNCHED ) off turn 7, rolled end over end all the way down the cliff, passengers escaped miraculously at the last minute and it burst into a flaming mushroom cloud. Burnt to a crisp.

There was also another incident several years later where two weren't as lucky...

here is Ian setting the record for Sebring
ONLY fwd STREET CAR to ever crack 2:30
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPrfoF6yjXI
another track record at Road Atlanta that still stands, done in 100deg heat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiJB_4UYMb8
since Ian's car has our race methanol system in it , it is prepared for the heat of Nevada. All of those times were set in the dead of summer in 100+ heat
Those records are the only ones still standing after a cold spell that went through late last yr. All the other classes records fell but Ian's. What's that tell you?
