Do I have to have two harnesses?

I can't remember but isn't the rule if you have a harness for the driver in a DE class that you have to have one for the passenger side also?

I want to install a harness for my car for track days but was under the impression if I have one, I need one for the passenger.

Can anyone verify this?

Thanks,

Mark

HPDE groups require the same restraints for driver and passenger, so it's either no harnesses or two harnesses.

As an aside, if you keep your eyes on the Marketplace, harnesses will show up pretty frequently. Have fun on the track.

I always do... As I progress (I'm in blue solo now) it's time to get a harness instead of using my CG lock.

You'll feel a huge difference, and any passengers you carry will appreciate the secure feeling as well. You should come up to the Northeast and check out Watkins Glen, Monticello and Lime Rock with us track addicts.

I personally can't wait because I've been in cars with harnesses and love the more secure feeling. I'm sure the passengers will like it.

I'd love to come up to the NE but I've got so many trackdays planned this year, I'll be lucky if I can get them all in...lol.

Hold on........this all depends on the group hosting the event. Some do some don't. Just check with the groups now before the season starts to find out for sure.

What kind of harness are you looking at?

If it is something other than a new racing-type seat with harness holes in it and a harness bar you may not be able to run a harness at all.

Some folks have sucessfully modded the Schroth quick-fit harness to use with the stock seats. The mod entails having to remove a very small sliver of the plastic surrounding the male end of the belt to fit into the stock female end.

Most of my track days are through Dark Side. I'm pretty sure they are one of the ones that demand both sides.

Does Schroth not make belts for the R56?

I'd like 5 point harnesses but I don't want a rollbar in my car. I need to look into what type of connection point options I have.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mark

PS. Are they modifying the Schroth belts or the OEM belts where they attach? I'm not sure how the anchoring is done without a rollbar.

The mod needed to do to get the Schroth to work with the 2nd gen cars is simply removing a bit of plastic that surrounds the male end of the Schroth harness where it connects to the cars female end by the handbrake.

The Schroth belts do not have the approval from Schroth to be used in the 2nd gen cars. The reason is the testing req'd to get it approved involves lots of money and they have to be certain the seat back can withstand the loads imposed on it from the harness. A concern about installing these may also be that the tech inspector may be aware of the fact that they aren't approved for use in your car.

They use the existing belt connections at the floor and rear seats and are easily installed and removed. They are a 4-point system, but they have an anti-submarine design.

The quick-fit harness is the only alternative if you want to keep your stock seats and not have to install a harness bar.

Most HPDE require same restraints for driver and passenger, but check their rules.
I have it setup in my car where the passenger can choose to either use the stock 3-point belt or the harness.
Dark-side events are great events. I've attended several of them.
I see you are located in Charlotte, any change you are going to the BMW Tarheel HPDE @ VIR the end of this month? There will be a big group from Charlotte going.

orangecrush, you mentioned 5-point harnesses. The only way that you can mount those is to also install aftermarket seats with the proper opening in the seat to accommodate the anti-submarine strap.

I thought that the Tarheel group went last weekend (or was it the weekend before?)

If there is one at the end of this month, I'd LOVE to go. I'll log on and see what's up.

I love VIR (though I prefer the south course for the mini)

Are you going?

Ahhhhh, that makes sense. Well I guess a 4point setup is better than a stock seatbelt with a CG lock.

A couple of questions if you don't mind.

Does anyone make a good 4 pt for the R56?

Does anyone make one that I don't need a rollbar to attach the harness? Something more for streetcars that want to go to the track about a dozen times a year?

Thanks much,

Mark

Yes I will be going.
You can check out trackschedule for a list of HPDE's. Currently the calendar is under construction though...

You can also see a list at motorsportreg.com

If you decide to go with a 4 pt, I would choose Schroth. Their 4 pt harnesses have a anti submarine mechanism built in. I'll let them do the explanation about their asm system. Some HPDE schools won't allow you to use a 4 pt harness. I think they are mostly Porsche clubs. Again check their rules. No issue with Dark Side events and BMW Tarheel events.

You could install a harness bar instead of a roll bar, but I could not find any (good) harness bars for the R56

Though I haven't seen a pic of it, I was reading about a product called a monkey bar.

I'll look into it. Thanks for all the advice. I thought about it before and had decided against it but I'm seriously thinking of putting the JCW Recaro seats in so I can use a 5 pt. system.

Schroth is the only 4-point harness manufacturer.

Besides Schroth, Sabelt, Sparco, G-Force, all offer 4-point harnesses

Is it also required to have 2 CG Locks?

Everytime I've done a trackday (done about 10-12 days in the last year and a half) I've used a CG lock on my side only.

No one has said anything...

When I find a set, I'm buying a set of harnesses.

Hi,

DE class does not have the prominent saying that it should have one for the passenger, I guess.

You want to make sure to get the Schroth quick-fit, no other 4 or 5 point system can be used w/o a harness bar.
