Drifting

So ummm how to start this?

Went to a track today ... there was a little bit of water and diesel on the road (or a lot) and yea one thing led to another and before I knew it my driving instructor said "Grab the handbrake" Like any good student I did what he said, however all it made me do was a 180. After a good hours practice I was literally drifting around corners, and not like 10 degrees off center, it was a good 60 or more degrees of center. Then the rest of the night was pure bliss.

All I can say is that has to have been the most fun I have had in my MC.

PS, Ill have all the video footage and stills within a few days I hope.

I have not received the pictures or video yet, but ill post them as soon as I get them.

And yeah, I would enter the corner and do the Scandinavian Flick (turn away from the corner then turn into it) to enduce the car roll, then when I was getting towards the apex of the corner I would hit the handbrake and I would continuously control it through the drift using the hand brake. With the steering I had to counter steer it but then I had to turn back in to the corner like normal so the car wouldn't whip back in line. I was doing drifts in a row as well, where the car would drift around a left hand corner than into a right hand corner.

Most people will tell you that you can't drift a FWD car and I agree. In my opinion, you must be able to add power and be able to steer the car while not gripping to actually drift. Obviously, if you add power while sliding a FWD car, it won't gain speed and stay sideways.

Yeah, you can slide a FWD car, I've done it in the rain plenty of times but it's not a textbook "drift".

It's fun though!

Just don't go sign up for a drift practice or competition day, you won't get too far.

Yeah I know that you can not do a true drift in a FWD car. It was more or less just sliding the back out.

But I have to say it is a lot of fun.

I think drifting is drifting. If you're slipping sideways around a corner, whether it's fwd, rwd or 4wd it's called drifting. Rear wheel drive is better because you have power-on oversteer to make it happen.

Wikipedia:

"Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motor sport involving the use of the technique of turning your car sideways. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa), and the driver is controlling these factors."

So by the sounds of it as long as you get your car to do that you are drifting. Its just a different method in doing it in FWD or RWD cars.
