Respectfully and soberly submitted
Wow. Heartbreaking. I don't know who he is but I'm pissed that something like this happened. Hopes go to his family, team, and friends.

Alcohol has a lot of unintended consequences.

Re: Richmond NASCAR race: you missed a good one!

Most NASCAR races are too long, by 100 laps, at least. But sometimes that world of motorsports really comes together and just blows you away. Talladega last week ... it's already being called one of the best races in NASCAR history .. 50+ lead changes by 21 drivers, I believe. Yowsah.

I'll basically watch any kind of racing. Watched MotoGP on SpeedTV at lunch today, then went to Lime Rock to watch Rolex SCS testing after work.... including the RSR MINIs. Very cool

Hmm... gotta go and check the TV Guide for the next Legends of Karting ... nothing like watching 14-year-olds hauling the mail.

I'll still take Indy's wheel to wheel finishes myself.

I don't know if that's better or if the one where Andretti Jr. lost a multiple car length lead to Hornish in the final turn of the Indy 500 in 2006.

I am a big F1 fan
(not nascar although will be lucky to work the pits when they come to Infenion)

Not growing up in the US ... keeps my racing brain cells working as far as left and Right ...

I appreciate the nascar heritage and any racing is racing, they also are a marketing dream experiment.. that really isn't a Chevy, Ford, Dodge or Toyo ..

More to the piont F1 should NOT be a "spec" class ... it is becomong that unfortunantly more and more.

I grew up 8 Km from Kylami in South Africa in the late 70s and could HEAR the testing.

Those where the days when I was racing for Eddie Keisen / Jody Shector on motorcycles. They owned a Yamaha delealersip that I worked at and raced for.

I had the chance to help prep the 6 wheel Elf.. those where the days, when if you could thingk it and do it ... Go try it ! F1 should be the test bed and showcase for tech. ....

There is passing in F1 it just doesn't take 3 corners and they need to turn left and right.

Glad to see the open wheel families getting together here in the US, that is good racing.

Actually MOTO GP is some of the best racing you can see .... well at least the last 10 min of the race...

That's so true!!! F1 is an amazing race though, and it's exciting as well.. the technicality of it is freaking sweet, to pass is a skill all well needed. and it does change the game, completely! As for Nascar... hummm.... it's bumper cars.. yes theres passing and what not but how hard it it to pass on a loop? Back in the day it was something to watch. Normal cars racing each-other... that does take skills, but now days there's no skill, in that matter. It still does take some skills to drive that fast though. But I'll still stick with F1 and WRC.. that's where it's at!

I love F1 and WRC, too. But, in defense of all forms of racing, look at Montoya, Villenueve, Carpentier, Allmendinger, and Franchitti .. all open wheel guys who wanted a NASCAR ride ... and are having one heckuva time finding their groove. Tony Stewart - an awesome multi-series racer - came from Indy Car but his well-roundedness (if that's a word?) made a big difference. Robby Gordon is a good example of the racer's racer ... a multi-series talent who is having a tough time in NASCAR (he's pretty much my favorite all-around driver). So if the open wheel guys typify the most talented in racing today, it would seem that they could get in a NASCAR ride and win. Or place in the top 20 most of the time.

But I'm not here to argue that anyone should watch NASCAR if they are not turned on by it! I completely understand and dig open wheel ... watched Grand Prix last night for probably the 20th time!

Oh my...THAT is incredible racing!! Racing at it's absolute FINEST!!!!

But of course it doesn't count as "racing" per se, because they are only going in an oval, right? I kid I kid

Alright, let me reprase. If it comes down to oval/round track racing, I'll take Indy over NASCAR any day of the week and twice on Sunday. They at least break 200 mph. And than some. The top cars for the 500 are running 225+. But, if F1 is on at the same time as IRL, Indy will be only during the commercials of F1. And I better not miss Racing Per Matchett...

You don't think NASCAR's are breaking 200mph? Lap times are quicker open wheel, but NASCAR's hit top speeds in the 200's at several tracks, and could at many they don't, if it weren't for the restrictor plates.

The Indy cars are maxed out too--they're actually slower than they used to be (Anyone remember the 230's?), because of safety concerns. I can remember when the Indy car drivers refused to drive because the speeds/track were unsafe (can't remember which track it was though).

As for finishes, yes a close open wheel finish is awesome, but unfortunately are few and far between as opposed to NASCAR. Don't get me wrong, I love both series, but its hard to call one better than the other--they're different, each with their own appeal.

I don't follow NASCAR but the last I heard the highest speed they have hit in the last few years was 190-195 or so at (probably?) Daytona. Yeah, they broke 200 but that was 20 years ago before the plates came into effect.

Not Daytona, that's restrictor plate. Nascar is still hitting well above 200 at Indy, maybe a few of the other larger tracks too that aren't restrictor plate limited.

Granted, Indy is still quicker, but NASCAR is still breaking 200 at a few of the superspeedways, where its safe enough for the cars to run those speeds. At a few of the other tracks they've had to put the restrictor plates in to slow things down, just like Indy car made changes to keep speeds down. Heck, we almost saw 240 mph at Indy a while back; that's just insane!

Both series are kind of maxed out on speed, which isn't necessarily a bad thing--it levels the playing field to a certain degree, although teams with deep pockets are still going to have an advantage getting the car set up properly.

I think that's the MINI's honest truth. Very different appeal (although to be consistent, I definitely tend to enjoy F1 more). But, I've had great times with friends at NASCAR events. It's a little harder to see F1 live here.

I couldn't make the Long Beach Grand Prix this year; I'm hoping to next year.

Well they broke 200mph last week at Darlington, but it was a dreadfully boring race, virtually from start to finish. I'll take the 0.53-mile oval at Bristol, TN over a lot of NASCAR superspeedways ... Bristol's like watching a race happen in a blender!

We're going to watch the RSR MINIs run in the Rolex GT at Lime Rock next weekend ... now that's going to be awesome

I was at Indy for qualifying in 1996 when Arie Luyendyk AVERAGED 236-237 mph for a lap... I don't know what speeds he was hitting in the straights to achieve that average... Scary fast , yet amazing and cool at the same time.

It's amusing because both stories popped up, caused a hell storm and then disappeared pretty quickly. Still hate NASCAR, though....Wait, Is it wrong to like tractor pulls and lawn mower racing but hate NASCAR? I mean, all 3 are hardcore trailer trash sports but, come on? Lawn mower racing? Can't beat it!

That video is........weird. I saw a few clips of it on another auto forum and all I could do is sit there and be like . And it's actually Max Mosley who was caught, not Ecclestone.

We watched David Ragan and Travis Kvopil (NASCAR cup guys) testing this week at Watkins Glen (they were running with the Open Track people at the Trackmasters WGI performance driving event 7/30 - 7/31). Ragan was absolutely awesome, very aggressive, very precise in his driving. It's gotta be a major chore manhandling OR finessing a cup car around the 11 turns at WGI ...

I laughed to myself last night. I was watching Formula 1 Debrief and as they went to a break, they were showing highlights of the German Grand Prix. I watched the clips of which a lot were low angle, high speed shots and a good aerial shot of some passes and I said "Nice! Looks badass!". Then they rolled commercials and the first one up was for NASCAR. They ran the same basic style of clips and all I could do is go "Blah, boring. Woof, change the channel!"
