transmission: manual or auto?

Hello. hopefully soon I will be the new owner of a mini coopers. I was wondering how tough the transmissions are and some guidance on selecting a manual or auto. I do plan on some track time but for the most part it will be a commuter. I am planning more on what happens after the warrantee expires. I need, tough, dependable and easy to fix/replace. I have driven both a manual and autos so I am well aware of the discomfort and comforts . Sorry, I did not search as this is being typed from my phone and it is painful to read webpages (i'm at work :( )Thanks for you wisdom and comments!

Which model MINI and what year?

Early 2002-2004 Base coopers with 5 speed Midland transmissions had some trouble.

Some early 2002-2004 Base Coopers with CVT transmissions had trouble.

Better transmissions were base Cooper with 5 speed manual Getrag or more recent 2005 or later 6 speed manual Getrag transmissions.

Cooper S models with automatic transmission and paddle shifters had some early problems. Try searching.

Manual transmissions and 2005 or later MINIs would be your best bet.

Rent a race car. Buy the automatic.
