Shocking and impressive at the same time.My boss forwarded this to me so I thought it only appropriate to share it.

Just something to keep in mind when autocrossing.

Yikes!

At least it was in a parking lot at 25 mph instead of a track at 125.

Keep in mind? How to use a torque wrench? Or to tighten them at all? Would love to hear the rest of this story.

One of the sites I found mentions that the nuts were torqued but they were the wrong size

Hmmm, and he passed tech??? Seems they would have noticed the wheels kinda loose. Strange.

I think we've all been through a few tech inspections that were a joke. I can't remember the last time a tech guy wiggled the tires.

They usually do that at the BMWCCA autocross events in that I do, but yeah totally depends on who's doing it.

The guy pitted next to him stated that he watched the car owner torque all the lug nuts... the problem was wrong size lugnuts, slightly too big. the Rx-7 has 12x1.5 studs, lugnuts for 1/2 inch bolts are 12.7 mm with a slightly finer thread pitch. with an impact gun they would go right on, but would be slightly cross threaded, and would have no holding strength. Since all the lugnuts seem to be right around the car, this seems like a likely answer.

Therein lies the lesson about impact wrenches! Get it good and threaded by hand before applying the impact wrench. If this guy had done that for more than a few threads, he would have realized something was wrong.

I don't know that he used an impact gun, but that is the only way I could see it happening
