Brake pad tabs

Does anyone know what the purpose of the tabs on the brake pads are for? One of mine recently broke and is clinking against the wheel weights inside my rim. Should I break it off? Is there anything I can do about this? They're EBC Redstuff, but the OEM pads have these too.

They decrease vibrations.
It’ll stop just fine if you remove
the loose one.
