Will muffler shops know what I'm talking about when I call?

What exactly do you tell them? I'm unfamiliar with the exhaust layout on these cars. Will they just know what to do?

Thank you!

They may not. The one you want to get rid of is the long cylindrical tube in the centre of the car.

+1 on some info please!

Maybe somebody who kept their resonator "just in case" could please measure the outer diameter of the pipes at both ends and the length of the resonator itself? That info would be great for us DIY'ers.

Picked up an Akrapovic DP from the NAM marketplace a few weeks ago and had it installed along with a res delete on January 2nd. Sounds amazing.

There is a bit too much drone at highway speeds. But I am really loving this. No CEL as the RMW tune is already prepped for this setup.

I am going to have to try the dynamat under the rear set trick to see if that helps in my car.

NAM peer pressure strikes again!!

The resonator is 26 inches long and the outer diameter of both ends is 2.25 inches or 60mm.

After living with my JCW exhaust sans resonator for several months now. I've decided to post a few daily driver observations:
1. POP AND BURBLE: Lot's more pop and burble (PNB). In sport mode the PNB is almost over the top. Let me state, for the record, I LOVE PNB. I'm almost surprised to hear my self say it, but with my car in sport mode the PNB is a bit excessive. My opinion. Prior to my resonator delete, the PNB with sport OFF was very mild/almost imperceptible. Now, sans resonator the PNB with sport OFF is PERFECT. To recap: sport on, PNB is excessive; sport off, PNB just right.

2. Growl: With the resonator gone, I appreciate an excellent low growl in from the system. This is perfect. This growling tone is best enjoyed motoring around town and normal speeds and cruising city streets at speeds of 25-55mph (as legally posted).

3. Hard Acceleration: Without the resonator this system sounds completely different under hard acceleration. This is good and bad. The good is more growl and more decibels. The bad is some of those decibels are in cabin drone. Also bad is the noticeable BARK I get on decel when shifting under hard acceleration. Let me explain more. It goes kind of like this: 1st gear hammer down, let of the gas for the change up to 2nd and you are immediately presented with this loud BRRRAAAAPPP! from the exhaust. I personally don't care for this, it sounds just the tiniest bit ricey. Overall it sounds much more like I would expect a more track prepped MINI to sound.

4. DRONE: It definitely drones. I'd say it drones bad. That said, the drone is directly correlated to speed and throttle. The further you push the car past 65mph the worse the drone gets. In Cali its not uncommon for traffic to move at a 75 to 80mph pace. It's pretty loud in my car at those speeds and I have to turn my stereo up quite a bit louder to enjoy my music now. You can also expect an increase in the drone anytime you press the little pedal on the right during a passing maneuver.

If I made frequent long trips in the car, I'd definitely have my resonator re-installed. The highway drone is definitely killing my buzz. In town driving I'm pretty happy with it overall. I may see if I can find a more performance oriented/smaller resonator to strike a better balance.

I agree with every point that biggripper stated above. You will hear some drone at highways speeds depending on how much gas you are giving the car.

The pop and burble was a bit too much with this setup.

This proved too much for me so I opted to leave the resonator on when I swap out the factory JCW exhaust for the full turbo back Akrapovic Evo exhaust.

Too funny…
My thoughts on biggripers comments are:
1 Sport mode on, please. Only minor difference for me with it off. Principally the duration of the pop/burble is shorter and only minor sound reduction with Sport mode off.
2 Spot on.
3 I don’t consider the sound in any way ‘ricey’ and haven’t heard any comments from other to this effect.
4 Excessive Drone - Hello, it is called a resonator for a reason
Maybe I am more lucky than others, but mine does not seem to drone.
Two long distance trips of ~1500 miles each, and plenty of shorter ones (150-250 miles) and I haven’t found the exhaust note to be intrusive or annoying.
Then again, maybe I am slightly deaf.
Well, that is my 2¢.

has anyone weighed the removed resonator? I'm curious about any weight savings this may bring...

I think the stock JCW exhaust sounds muted and now I want to delete the resonator. Sounds great. One question though - any of the folks who have deleted resonators know if their vehicle will still pass emissions tests for those of us whom live in emissions conscious states?

This mod should have ZERO impact on the vehicle's ability to pass smog testing. The resonator exists only to attenuate the sound of the system. Unless emissions testing includes a test for noise emissions.

I'm putting new springs, rear bar, and a torque arm insert on my JCW Coupe this week. Think I'm going to de-resonate while I have the car in the air as well. Why not I say! If I hate it I'll just reverse it. Luckily my nephew owns the shop so I get to have all my fun for free and mistakes aren't so costly, lol!

Just did this today, and am loving it. All the brraap, pop, and snap you could want!

As for drone...its a matter or perspective. I had a SRT-8 Challenger with custom exhaust and that DRONED. Felt like your brain was going to be liquified at 75mph (best sounding car ever at 35-55!). This is a slight hum in comparison at 75-80. Did 85-90 and it became louder but not that bad. Helps hide the squeaks and rattles.

So close to doing this mod but still slightly on the fence. My last concern is that I use the Bluetooth phone relatively frequently. After removing the resonator, can one still successfully make calls over Bluetooth? I also removed my rear seats so it may be slightly louder, which is fine. I wonder, should there be drone, if reinstalling the seats will help with that issue. My catless headers and borla exhaust c5zo6 seriously droned. Still the best sounding car I ever had. I'm sure this couldn't possibly drone nearly as much.

Drone will not be an issue with your Bluetooth stuffs. I use mine all the time with no issue. The newer cars have lots more sound deadening, which quells the drone inside.

I'm really glad to see other folks jumping on this bandwagon. It is awesome. The OP contacted me about this before doing it, and from what I can see, other folks are loving it as well!

Would anyone know if installing a catless downpipe while keeping the resonator, presumably to cut down on some of the drone, would sound comparable to a resonator deleted system?

evolve ran back to back dyno tests of the res delete pipe, their Cooper S lost 10bhp with it fitted.

Hmm, so with my res delete, I ended up losing power to my jcw?

I know it doesn't make sense when you think about it, and the way it obstructs flow but i was thinking of buying one. I asked evovle who tune our FJCW and they said not to bother.

They ran the car with the res and then without and lost power.

damn. I kept my resonator, so I guess I can always have it put back on. That sucks though, I love the sound without the resonator.

I suppose a decrease in back pressure could cause this? Seems counterintuitive that more flow would decrease hp but I'm no expert. Regardless I'm not seeing in noticeable decrease in power from my JCW so I'm not putting it back on. I'll have a new exhaust in the future and ill make decisions then.

My nephew did just this and yes it sounded comparable. It was on his STI so there would be some difference but same in principle I'd imagine.

I recently had my resonator put back on after a year of driving with the delete and I thought it instantly felt peppier once reinstalled. I guess it was not just my imagination...

Funny because I felt the same when I had mine removed. I'd likely feel it again if I replaced it. The butt dyno is an amazing tool even if its mostly in our heads.

Big question to me is, with a tune, what effect would a deleted resonator have on the car? A proper catless downpipe makes a big difference in performance yet removing the resonator kills it. Strange!

Maybe my imagination but I swear the traction control was going nuts (flickering dash light) when I rolled on the throttle in third gear - pulling from down low too. I do need some new tires but this never happened with the delete. One theory is the curve shifts and you get more power up high with the delete but I've never seen a dyno run. Can this place show us their dyno runs??
