I was a Mobil 1 die hard for over 20 years until I found out that they quietly changed to a cheaper base stock YEARS ago in order to bring down the cost of Mobil 1. Go search the topic on Bobistheoilguy.com. They sued somebody for saying their dino based oil was "synthetic" instead of TRUE synthetic like Mobil 1 WAS. It was ruled that "synthetic" was a "marketing term" and had no specific meaning. SO, Mobil switched to using the dino based base stock to compete by price.

SO.....After over 20 years of using nothing in my vehicles except Mobil 1, I now have switched to Castrol and Pennzoil real honest to goodness no lying synthetic.

Of course, NOW the issue to learn about the Pennzoil that is made from a base stock that starts as natural gas to give a cleaner stock. Is that a good thing or not......The world is always changing.....

The 0w-40 Euro formula is the real deal and the only one approved by MINI.

I don't think that's all Pennzoils - I believe it was just for platinum, though I'm not sure how they get away with still calling it 100% synthetic. I've used Pennzoil Ultra and it is legit.

I actually am still in preference of amsoil zrod 10w30 - tons of zddp and the viscosity is actually between 10w30 and 0w40, best of all worlds. exclusively use it in the evo

BMW 5W-30 Full Synthetic Oil is currently supplied by Mobil. Most peaople say the dealers coost is cheaper than the parts store. In January it's changing to Shell, guess they got a better deal from Shell.

I wonder why they would recommend a (MINI) non-approved oil?

Just an update MINI has new oil under Shell. In one (1) Liter size. We have it in stock.

This is the first time its changed since MINI launched in 2002 in the US. Meet the BMW/MINI LL-01 spec.

The old Castrol is in short supply and will be NLA.

New Shell MINI Oil 5w-30 Euro:
