oil drain plug on 09 factory JCW

I watched the step by step instruction on changing the oil. They refer to a #8 hex wrench to unlossen the drain plug. I have never heard of allen keys or wrehches refered to as a number size. Did they mean a 8MM allen wrench? It's my understanding that they are either inch, or metric.
Thanks again
Jerry

I took my JCW to an Oil Can Henry's for an extra oil change between free Mini service intervals. They couldn't find the oil filter on my JCW so I went home and called Mini for the service. Cost me $100 at Mini.

Yes, you need an 8mm allen wrench to take out the drain plug. You can buy an allen socket this size and use your ratchet too, that's what I use.

You also need to remove the one screw that holds the coolant reservoir, then tip the top to the back of the car and lift it out and set it saide so you can get to the oil filter cannister...remember, it's plastic.

When I changed the oil after 1300 miles in my 2009 Clubby S, I changed out the OEM oil pan plug with a convential (I think it is 16MM) plug with a head on it so I can use a closed end 16mm wrench (6 point) to remove the plug. I did this because I read in more than one of these threads how easy it is to round off/strip the OEM drain plug; thus making it most difficult to remove. I also tried a magnetic plug but found it difficult to re-thread due to it being magnetic. I figure even if the newer plug becomes rounded, I could always use vice-grips to grasp onto the rounded end enough to remove the rounded plug. Just a thought...
