Hi all..i have a recent factory jcw, almost full specked, it has 600 miles on the clock, and since the first km i notice that the fan starts on for anything...
It's still in the break in period, so i haven't run it hard yet, and my "jonnie" is constantly hitting the fan on...
Here in Portugal for the past week, temperatures have increased some degrees, nevertheless, if it is like this now, i imagine in the summer under heavy charge!!

One friend of mine has another factory JCW, despite not beeing the same config ( doesn't have sat nav for ex) and i know all this is part of the equation, however his fan barely turns on, even in heavy traffic.
How does your JCW's fan been working so far?
regards,
Afonso

Mine turns on almost every time I drive for more than 10 minutes, specially in heavy traffic, and sometimes after turning off the car.
I think it is absolutely normal.
I live in Mexico city so we are never under cold weather.

I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina USA. My fan comes on practically every time in mild temperatures. But we do have a 2.5 mile drive up 7 switch back curves rising about 2500 ft.; and we do enjoy a spirited drive up the hill, so maybe that is why.

since it's a turbo running such high boost with no turbo timer, I'm guessing the fan is just to cool down the turbo. I wouldn't worry about it

Guess so, in a way; but it is my daily drive or nearly every day. Since I work from home, I don't go out every day.
How are you, haven't seen you much at THMMC, lately.

How loud is this fan you're talking about? Can you hear it while driving? Or idle? Or after the car turns off?
Hi tHERE!
It is not a huge amount of noise, different from normal fan work, when it has to.
The thing is that it works very often compared to other JCW's during the exact same roads and circuits.
The car is almost 2000 km on the clock, so i'll start pushing for it, and see if the cicle of the fan works in any other way.

Long Island here, and fan is always on after shut down, and longer when warm out. Also another slight humming sound, possibly oil pump cooling down turbo?

The fan is going to come on when the senser says the turbo/cooling needs it. As long as it comes on don't worry about it. You only have a problem if the fans don't come on when needed.

The Humming noise is the water pump cooling down the turbo.
ronnie, i'm aware the problem would be if the fan would't start off, nevertheless, i ride quite a lot with a friend that also has a factory JCW, and in the same roads, my fan is always on, trafffic included, and he's will not work even once!
My JCW is a December build, and his JCW has already 6 months.
For what i've been reading, later JCW are all having their fans nrunning like hell, contrary to the first ones..i would really like to know the reason why...the fan working parameters have been changed, the question would be why?
And would a larger IC will decrease the effort of the running fan?

Hi Fon,
I bought my JCW in October of 2008. I live in Florida so my fan does stay on a lot when driving around town. When I shut off the engine the fan will usually stay on for about 2 to 5 minutes. The sticker on my drivers door says 06/08 so I'm assuming my car was built in June of 2008.
You may have to go to your dealer and see if there is anything wrong with your thermastat.
I really don't know if a factory change has been made concerning the fan. I'm sure if there was a bulletin on any change such as that, Mini would send out a letter like they did for my brake rotors and Exhaust tips. I can't really tell if my fan is on or off driving down the highway.
Let us all know what the dealer finds on your problem.

Huh. I'd actuallly like it if my fan ran more. That turbo gets a little hot for my liking; I try to pop the hood after a drive if I can.
Mine was built in 07/08. I don't think I've ever heard the fan run after the car was off.
I wonder if any NAM members who work at a dealership might know what the deal is?

I took my JCW for a hard drive yesterday, when I got back, and i'm not joking here, my turbo was glowing bright red, not a mild red, but like this:

It stayed like that for over 10 mins. Is it normal?

The December build cars seem to pull a lot harder than the July build cars. Maybe they have increased the boost on the later cars causing the turbos to build up more heat...???
6th Gear
my car was an August-built car, that would be more similar to July-build yeh?
I didn't know that about the factory JCWs, maybe I'll trade it in in a few months for a new one....
I hope no warp occurred due to the heat...

That's what I was thinking.... I think I'd be more worried if I didn't hear anything.

I finally heard my fan turn on! It was after about 90 minutes of driving in 95F heat, and only stayed on for about 10 seconds, haha. But at least I know it works!

I think my fan come on almost every time after I dive the car. I'm still under the first 1,200miles and I'm not pushing it hard at all. I am assuming it is normal. The weather lately is like 65-70.
