I am confused. I thought there was suppose to be like 40HP difference between the two cars? (at least on paper I guess)

Still no comparison between stage 1 JCW and factory JCW cars on the same day?? Wouldn't mind seeing the difference.

The Cooper S is rated at 172 crank hp. It dynoed more than that to the wheels, so it's clearly under-rated. (Torque to the crank is rated at 192 on overboost, and it dynoed 202 to the wheels!)

For those of you not familiar with chassis dynos, the transfer of power to from the engine, through the transmission and differential to the wheels, results in some power loss. We usually use 15% on 2wd cars as a rule of thumb, although it can vary by car.

The JCW is rated at 208 hp and 207 lb-ft on overboost (at the crank). It's STILL under-rated -- even if we assume only a 10% drivetrain loss, it's making more like 218 horsepower and 236 lb-ft at the crank. It's just not as under-rated as the Cooper S.

On another note - did you get to drive one today? I don't expect it to be anywhere near as fast as your current ride but what did you think for a bone stock car?
I just put my 10LB bag of potatoes on the scale and it only weighs 9 1/2 lbs...man I am pissed off

These results are pretty amazing.

Quick question. This sub-forum is called "Factory JCW (2009+)". My JCW was built in July 2008. The dealers are calling it the 208 hp Factory Built JCW. It is arriving in a week. How will I be able to tell (apart from reading the handbook, lol)? Should i look for the JCW badges under the hood?

Cheers,
Elie (from Australia)

It's a 2009 Factory JCW, then. The 2009+ refers to the model year.

Do you think BMW will release a tuning kit for the JCW FactoryCar

It would seem the JCW Stage 1 Tuning kit only makes 10HP less than the Factory Car. It would be a shame if all that work had been done to the motor if they were not going to add a tuning kit for the Factory car to add an additional 20HP and utilize the motors improved internals.

Does anyone think there is a chance of and Intake, Boost Tube, ECU Tune kit offered by BMW for the Factory JCW to bring it to a factory rated 230 HP.

Yeh, i know that the 2009+ refers to the model year, that's the source of my confusion. My car is not an 09 model, and yet they are calling it a factory built JCW

Check with your dealer - in Australia they may be starting their model year later than in America. If it's factory built than more than likely it is the JCW.

Ah, I didn't see that you're from Australia. Anyway, my JCW was built in July 08 and it's an 09 Factory JCW, fwiw.

In the US, cars have model years -- i.e., a 2009 could be sold in 08, etc...

in the rest of the world, the year of the car is based on when it's registered...for what it's worth.

that looks like a strong one. The dyno i saw before was 203hp adn 208 torque. I'll be getting my JCW dynoed in the not too distant future.

How many miles are on yours?

The one I saw dynoed had less than 100.

I know they get stronger as the engine loosens up. That is still a big increase.

I am thinking about installig a Uni-chip in my JCW. I called the factory and since I live only a few miles a way they were interested in protyping my car for the JCW chip. They said it is all in the boost numbers. Since the JCW already has a heavier turbo, I am wondering how much more boost they can program?

My car is not broke in yet so they suggested this will all have to wait for a few weeks.

Hey if they wanna foot the bill to test their product I say give it a shot. Nothing to lose and only boost to gain

your jcw already puts out 19lbs of boost. you don't want to go much higher.

i'd suggest skipping the unichip and going for a tune.

Each graph shows two different runs.

THIS IS NOT JAN'S RMW TUNE. It is a blind mild first tune by a Hawaii tuner who uses the same tools as Jan. The numbers aren't outstanding but keep in mind this is the Alpha stage tune.

This is the first dyno I've done with this car.
Now that we know where we are at he can start making adjustments.
I'm hoping for ~30+lbs more torque once the tuner starts fine tuning stuff.
211hp and 217 torque at the wheels. 19.5 lbs boost

A/F looks like a sniffer test was done, pretty rich there! At least its always better to run rich than lean. How does it feel when comparing to the S? Does JCW have lots more potential in terms of low-end grunt and top-end?
