CM left my wife stranded

Well - I just had the CM towed in to the dealership. I haven't had to tow a car in for service in over a decade.

Have any of you had this issue:

Wife said that she got a traction control malfunction warning then the car shuddered and stalled. She was able to start it and drive in 1st gear but when shifting into 2nd it would shudder and stall out. Stalled out on her while pulling away from a light - pretty embarrassing to have your 40k+ brand new vehicle stalled out in the middle of an intersection! After being stranded for 20 minutes the car started and she was able to limp home the 5 miles in 1st gear. It took her 2 hours to go what earlier took 10 minutes. I wasn't about to try and drive it to the dealership after hearing that.

So far we've had now 2 warranty issues with less than 5k miles on this vehicle.

Which part of the story was the part where she got stranded? I read it twice but couldn't find it.

Almost a year old here, and no warranty issues (yet). Sorry to hear about your troubles.

She was left stranded for 20 minutes, the car would not drive... wasn't a "story"

No issues in my F60 but had something similar happen to my R60. It ended up being a high pressure fuel pump failure.

They had the car all day Friday and could not figure it out. They think perhaps it may be some coding that didn't look right with the airbag module. Doing an ECU reset and we'll get it back Monday.

BTW - we have a 2019 loaner. The HUD control is no longer a dash button so to lower and raise it you have to dig into the MMI settings to lower it. That would be a huge PITA.

Didn't they move it when they moved the driving modes to the HUD's position on the toggle switches?

It was indeed moved for the "later" 2018 models (post June builds). However, as discussed briefly in a different thread, the HUD can be programmed to toggle with a single press on one of the 6 selector buttons.

Ah - I didn't think to look on the toggle switch. That's good. I didn't make sense for it to be only in the menu. We get the car back tomorrow - hopefully the ECU reset will solve this issue. I'll have to get back in there to code out all those darn bells and dongs again though. Urgh. I should just get the app...

Oh - I also noticed the loaner has no tint on the rear windows. Fishbowl. Ours came with tint on rears. Is that some new regulation now where they don't come with factory tint on rear?

Good news. Is this ECU reset something that can be done without going to a dealer? Only issue we've had with our CM is warranty battery replacement (dealer never maintained it during its life on the showroom floor). I don't want to think about doing that myself as it's buried behind the engine.

The CM stalled out on my wife yesterday again. She had to let it sit for 30 minutes before it would drive again. Will have to tow it in yet again. This better not turn into a nightmare.

Resetting ECU should not have been a solution to problem described and that dealer should have dug deeper.

Sounds like it went into "Limp mode". The computer will do that to prevent one from futher damaging the car.

If traction control light went on, and absent other noticable issues such as rotational NVH ( Noise/Vibration/Harshness) then they need to look for an issue with electronic sensors. Clutch / trans sensor, ABS or ASC sensor would be a good start....could just end up being a connector not fully seated during the build at factory, or disconnected when taking the blocks out of the springs put in thier for transport and removed at time of prep.

depending what state you are in, if they try to fix it and the it happens a third time, you’ll have standing to invoke a Lemon Law and get a refund or replacement. Good luck.

Car getting towed in again today. I really hope we don't get to a lemon law issue. I"m sure that would be a PITA too.

They have no idea what the issue is. They now are relying on "tech support" to help diagnose.

That usually means the problem escalated to MINI North America and may in turn be sent to Germany to have an engineer investigate.

Good luck.

if this doesn’t fix it, just lemon it. I had to do it with a Fiat 500 Abarth 4 years back.

They were not able to replicate the problem however they think it's a lateral G sensor which would make sense to me. My wife said the inital "stall" or limp mode only has happened while making turns. I'm thinking it's traction control intervening fully thinking the car is in a spin which would explain the symptoms she has had. They get the new sensor in tomorrow so hopefully we'll be good.
